Trump-Supporting Republicans to Paul Ryan: Get Out. Now

US Speaker Paul Ryan to leave Congress

House Speaker Ryan announces retirement

Downstate Illinois Republicans in Congress on Wednesday heaped praise on outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan, calling the Wisconsin Republican a great man who helped usher in legislative goals including landmark tax reform.

If Republicans lose their House majority - and many saw Ryan's retirement as confirmation of that possibility - the speaker's race will move to the Democratic caucus and it could be even more contentious and crowded. Claiming he's accomplished "a heckuva lot", he said the party can point to strong gains as lawmakers campaign ahead of November elections. Both men spoke at the closed-door meeting Wednesday, delivering tributes to Ryan, and both attended a GOP leadership dinner Wednesday night with Trump at the White House. (Spoiler alert: no). The right question to ask is "Will American policy be better or worse with him out of Congress?" The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan handicapper, rates 29 Republican-held seats as either toss-ups or leaning or likely Democratic, while just three Democrat-held seats are tossups or lean or likely Republican.

A record number of more establishment House Republicans have decided to retire in the Trump era, at least one explicitly citing Trump as a reason.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ryan told CNN's Jake Tapper that, seriously, he has no intention of running for any other political role in the future.

Ryan, from Janesville, Wisconsin, was first elected to Congress in 1998.

It's not all positive memories from House members.

Asked to what degree Mr Trump's presidency influenced his decision not to seek re-election, Mr Ryan said, "Not at all". Remarkably, Ryan was actually familiar with the details of his signature issue, and able to discourse knowledgeably about the trade-offs of various policy shifts. He also wanted a tax code so simple most returns could be filed on a postcard.

In 2012, Ryan became the vice presidential nominee for candidate Mitt Romney.

"I think he sees the writing on the wall, which is that this is going to be a really tough year for Republicans. We are with you Paul!" "On the contrary, it entrenches some of the most destructive features of Obamacare". We shouldn't be too quick to condemn those who attempt it. And when they go down, we should bury them with honors. But after Trump won the election, Ryan never ditched him.

Ryan insisted the looming prospect of returning to the minority wasn't a factor in his decision.

"It may encourage other Republicans to not run again, I think, more so than affecting the money", Massie told reporters. McCarthy has served in Congress for nearly a decade, and he's somehow managed to be one of the establishment figures in Congress closest to Trump.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee pounced on Ryan's announcement.

"That is what we're doing and that is what I'm proud about".

Democrats are hoping for a potential wave of voter enthusiasm stemming from opposition to Trump.

Scalise downplayed speculation in an appearance on Fox News before Ryan's announcement.

"This is the nightmare scenario", said former Rep. Thomas M. Davis, a Virginia Republican.

"I know the speaker remains personally committed to ensuring (the Congressional Leadership Fund) continues to succeed and has the resources it needs to maintain the House Majority", said Corry Bliss, the executive director of the CLF, a super PAC.

In order to inspire the necessary loyalty and camaraderie to pass legislation effectively, House Republicans need to know that the speaker has their back.

"I don't believe that", he said. "Everyone will start jockeying for position immediately".

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, for example, mounted a long-shot challenge to Pelosi after the 2016 elections.
