US-INTERNET-FACEBOOK-DEMONSTRATION

If Zuckerberg doesn't want to talk about this issue in front of lawmakers, it may be because he fears regulation that would curb Facebook's ability to track data on third-party sites.

Separately, the company began alerting some of its users that their data was gathered by Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrapped up two days of testimony before joint committees in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Here are the seven most notable developments from today's hearing.

"The only segment of the [internet] industry that has zero regulation, zero federal statutes is social media", Blackburn said. I don't know what information was leaked out and what it means to my Facebook. Zuckerberg responded that he couldn't remember.

That is an absolute departure [from the past].

And in the past, Facebook has described various forms of data collection that don't involve users directly giving it to the social network. Again, Zuckerberg didn't laugh and managed to reiterate that Facebook couldn't see Whatsapp messages. There's no telling how long this one will last, so settle in if you're going to watch. We're still rating Facebook as a wide-moat and valuing it at $198 per share. Some of the Russian ads were on Facebook.

Zuckerberg says Facebook can handle its own oversight.

On the question from Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat from Illinois, about how many companies did Kogan sell the data from Facebook to, Zuckerberg said that there are a handful of companies who got the user data harvested by Cambridge Analytica and he will follow up.

Cambridge Analytica has maintained that it deleted the data it received from Kogan's app when it learned that its retrieval violated Facebook's terms of service, and has denied that data acquired via the app was "used by Cambridge Analytica as part of the services it provided to the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign".

Zuckerberg offered two explanations for tracking web behavior.

Besides, Vaidhyanathan said, he pays ISPs, cable companies and newspapers "hundreds of dollars a month", and "they grab as much data as they can". The other, of course, was ad targeting. The 33-year-old Zuckerberg is vowing that the company is now investigating all apps and says the company will do a better job at regulating access to data.

But under pressure from Rep. Ben Lujan (D-NM), Zuckerberg said he was not familiar with the "shadow profiles."

David McKinley, R-W.Va., asked Zuckerberg what Facebook is doing to crack down on illegal opioid sales through the social media website.
