Rory Mc Ilroy and caddie Harry Diamond shake hands on the 18th green during the third round
Reed once claimed after winning a World Golf Championship at Doral that he was a top 5 player in the world, which subjected him to ridicule.
"I walked up to the first tee and had a really welcoming cheer, but then when Rory walked up to the tee, you know, his cheer was a little louder", Reed said, the bright pink of a Nike shirt created to match the course's blooming azaleas peeking out from his new green jacket.
Asked Sunday if it was bittersweet not to share his Masters victory with his parents, Reed said, "I'm just out here to play golf and try to win golf tournaments". A staple of U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, Fowler is ranked eighth in the world.
In 2011, the Northern Irishman led as he entered the final day, although he hit a disastrous round of eight-over par in what is remembered as one of the greatest collapses at Augusta.
I've followed Reed's progress closely, ever since he Monday qualified for five PGA Tour events in 2012 to earn enough cash to get his card.
"I just went out there and just tried to play the best I could and stay in the moment and not worry about anything else". In the end, had Reed's round played out the same way, Spieth would have still come up one shot shy.
Reed is the ninth first-time major victor in the past 12 Masters and all four major championships are now held by Americans - all of whom are aged 27 or under.
Fowler has seen good friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas win majors in recent years and was among the first to congratulate Reed outside the scoring area.
The best one came early Sunday. Throughout the day, the cheers for McIlroy and others were bigger than they were for Reed.
Fortunately for Reed, McIlroy was unable to put the pressure on as he missed a number of short putts in his round.
However, there were challenges coming from further down the leaderboard. On 13, he hit the green with a hybrid from the pine straw, hollering, "Go, go, go, go!" before his ball landed softly and fed to 12 feet. He sank a 7-foot birdie putt on 18 to pull within one and keep Reed under pressure to the 72nd hole.
According to Ryan, Reed's reputation still holds among some golfers on the PGA Tour, with some saying "Hide your things, Patrick's here" when he enters the locker room. Reed's also only recently started to show up on the leaderboards at majors, despite having been a brand name in golf for some time now.
The tie for the lead lasted only about 15 minutes, because Reed was not retreating.
Reed yanked his tee shot at the par-4 first left and into pine straw.
And when Reed walked on to the 18th green the BBC's Iain Carter noted the reception was "respectful" rather than the "whooping and hollering" normally reserved for a champion in waiting. He had stood in there against Spieth, who had a chance on this back-nine Sunday to shoot the lowest score - 63 - in Masters history and maybe even better than that if a couple of putts that burned the hole had dropped on the way to the clubhouse.
Fowler was nowhere for the first seven holes when he was 1-over for the day. He played the last 14 holes in three-over-par and it was left to Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm to put the heat on Reed, and they didn't disappoint. And Mickelson was seen for 11 shots despite finishing tied for 22nd. "I'm out there to do my job and that's to play golf".
Take Reed, for example, on Sunday at Augusta National. Patrick Reed told everybody who would listen to him when he first burst on the scene that he had enough game to win a major.
To Golf: "He's an uber-talented player but with a chequered history, one that's filled with controversies that date to his college years".
The Australian started one shot off the lead and both he and Cabrera birdied the final hole in regulation to extend proceedings. He took all those punches and more, including a crowd that made it clear from the very first hole it would root for anyone, including grand-slam seeking Rory McIlroy, over him.
And while Spieth did not set any records and he finished in third place, two strokes behind Reed, he nonetheless created another indelible Masters memory, something he has done in each of the last five Aprils as a perennial contender here.

While he didn't end up scoring in the game, he was a physical presence winning aerial duels against the West Ham defence. I thought I saw a definite movement with his knee towards Jack". "At least he is positive in what he is doing".
President Trump Tweeted Congratulations To Patrick Reed
He started nine shots behind going into the final round, and was inches away on two shots from a chance at another green jacket. McIlroy joined Cameron Smith (66), Bubba Watson (69) and Henrik Stenson (70) in a four-way tie for fifth at 9-under par .
