Gov. Rick Scott aims to unseat Florida's Democratic senator

At an event last September, Trump told reporters, "I hope this man right here, Rick Scott, runs for the Senate". As the third-largest state, and the largest one likely to have a tight race in 2018, Florida will likely see one of the most expensive Senate contests in US history.

The Republican governor was expected to criticize "career politicians" and call for term limits for members of Congress while formally announcing his campaign on Monday.

As a political outsider and later an unpopular incumbent, Rick Scott beat the odds and got elected - then re-elected - as Florida's governor, spending $86 million of his family's money in elections when Republicans did well nationwide. "There's a lot of old exhausted thinking up there". Washington is exhausted. And the truth is, both political parties share some of the blame.

"They (said) governor you just don't fit into Tallahassee".

"If it's good for us, I'm going to support what the White House wants to do", he said.

Scott said his agenda as governor, which focused on job creation, lower taxes and fewer regulations, met resistance from the Tallahassee establishment.

Scott is leaving office due to term limits, and had been urged to challenge Nelson, Florida's only statewide-elected Democrat, by President Donald Trump.

Scott is a multi-millionaire who never ran for office before he ran for governor in 2010.

Scott's response to the hurricanes has drawn some criticism, particularly in regard to the deaths at a Broward County nursing home that lost power during Hurricane Irma, but also considerable praise.

Scott was an early cheerleader for Trump - he led a super PAC that supported Trump's bid - and Trump has been publicly twisting Scott's arm to run for the Senate for months. No one, I don't believe hardly anybody, endorsed me in 2010.

"It takes time to work up through the seniority system, so I would think that that's particularly important to Florida", he added.

Rick Scott gives a speech in July 2014.

Rubio noted in the tweet that he will be "contributing to, voting for & supporting" Scott's candidacy, seemingly forgetting a long-ago promise he made not to do so way back on March 27. Democrats' strategy will be to hammer Trump in purple states, and attempt to ignore Trump in the redder states.

"I'm going to campaign for this job. Picking up Florida goes a long way to maintaining their majority". A February poll from Quinnipiac showed him with a 4-point edge over Scott. Nelson, a three-term incumbent, had raised $10.2 million by the end of last December, according to filings from the Federal Election Commission. The National Republican Senatorial Committee launched a digital ad Monday that goes after Democrats such as Nelson who voted against the tax bill approved by Congress late a year ago.

More controversy from Trump, economic upheaval or global conflict could tilt what Schale sees as a drum-tight race from start to finish.
