President Trump's Wild Response to the FBI Raid on Michael Cohen's Office

Michael Cohen has long been the keeper of Donald Trump's secrets from his business dealings to his personal affairs. One legal expert says the seizure of Cohen's records

The attorney-client privilege protects most attorney records, and the courts, even when issuing a search warrant directed at an attorney's office, require protection of legitimately "privileged" documents.

Michael Cohen is Donald Trump's personal lawyer who has worked for the President for some yearsWho is Michael Cohen?

Trump lashed out Monday evening at the White House, calling Mueller's investigation "a total witch hunt" and "an attack on our country, in a true sense". He said late in the day that the timeline might change, after news broke about federal raid of the offices of Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen. Ryan also said the seizure was unnecessary considering Cohen has been providing non-privileged documents to the Mueller case.

The raid did not appear to be directly related to Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the USA presidential election, the Times said. The payment was made just days before the 2016 presidential election. Again they found nothing and in finding nothing that's a big statement.

This seizure of evidence pursuant to search warrant on an attorney's office is a highly unusual and unsafe maneuver by any prosecutor.

It was reported earlier this month that Mueller told Trump's lawyers that the president is not a criminal target of the Russian Federation probe, but stressed that he remains a subject of the investigation.

In this case, Mueller opted to refer the matter to federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

But Preet Bharara, who served as the US Attorney in the Southern District of NY until he was sacked by Trump, suggested that prosecutors would not undertake such an aggressive move lightly.

On Monday, President Donald Trump learned that F.B.I. agents had raided an office and a hotel apartment that were the territory of Michael Cohen, his personal lawyer. That attempt has been the subject of campaign finance complaints and an inquiry last month by congressional Democrats, who said in a letter to Cohen that the situation could put Trump at risk of blackmail attempts.

The search doesn't look like instantly related to Mueller's investigation, however probably resulted from info he had uncovered.

The most striking parts of Trump's remarks, though, concerned what he might do about Mueller's investigation.

"I deal with clients all the time - I tell them on my word of honor that what you tell me is sacrosanct", he continued. The White House has denied her allegations.

Daniels has sued to be freed from the agreement arguing it was not valid as Trump did not sign it.

Daniels and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, have pushed for depositions from the president and Cohen.

The Times also reported on Tuesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been searching for records of payments to two women - including Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

But to be clear, Thursday (Apr. 5) while on Air Force 1, the President, for the first time, spoke about Stormy. In the email, the representative said funds had been deposited in Cohen's account.

In addition, a Washington law firm Cohen had been working with until recently - Squire Patton Boggs - told POLITICO that their relationship had ended, but confirmed that investigators nevertheless contacted the firm about a search warrant for Cohen's records.

How unusual is a search warrant on an attorney's office? . "These activities do not relate to the firm and we are in full cooperation".
