Key points from Sheryl Sandberg's Facebook apology tour

Facebook plans to let everyone unsend messages, will stop Zuckerberg until then

"The amount of compensation will depend on the level of distress suffered, but Facebook could be facing claims of up to GBP 500 (USD 700) per Facebook user if those users were able to demonstrate their distress". This, Facebook said, was "not authorize (d) and breached our policies".

That's a feature CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other higher-ups enjoy that regular users don't have, TechCrunch reported on Thursday night.

Under fire globally for allowing the data breach, Facebook sent a formal response to the questions the Indian government had raised on the issue.

"We're committed to getting this done in time for the critical months before the 2018 elections", he said.

"We will now be making a broader delete message feature available".

Facebook-owned Instagram has long had the option to "unsend" direct messages, while Facebook-owned WhatsApp recently launched a deletion function where unread messages can be deleted "for everyone". "We should have done this sooner - and we're sorry that we did not".

"These steps by themselves won't stop all people trying to game the system", wrote Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in a post Friday. These included limiting the retention period for Mark's messages in Messenger.

Global News has reached out to AIQ for comment, but in a previous statement the company said it has worked "in full compliance within all legal and regulatory requirements in all jurisdictions where we operate".

In addition, the 87 million users who might have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will get a more detailed message informing them of this. Facebook could keep doing this business, but it didn't take much for the negative PR appearances to outweigh its need; Facebook could simply drop it.

"The FTC looked the other way for years when consumer groups told them Facebook was violating its 2011 deal to better protect its users". According to TechCrunch, the recipients of the now-deleted messages were not informed at any stage that correspondence they received had been erased. They tell me this is similar to how retractions of Zuckerberg's messages work.

It seems very much that Facebook chose to make "unsend" part of Messenger because of the TechCrunch story-which makes it hard to believe that the company has had time to think through its potential implications.

Facebook already offers a "Secret" encrypted messaging feature that includes an Unsend expiration timer.

In an example distributed by Facebook, a mock-up ad with a picture of a candidate carries the words, "Political Ad - Paid for by XYZ State Party Committee". In a blog post, the company's executives said they're consulting third parties to determine the specific topics that would trigger its new disclosure rules, which Facebook said would evolve over time. You can find more information here.

Also, some users who logged in to Facebook through Android devices discovered that Facebook had been collecting information about phone calls they made and text messages they sent.

Facebook had previously stopped short of backing the legislation, saying it wanted to work with lawmakers further and announcing attempts at self-regulation.
