At least 14 dead after bus carrying junior hockey team crashes in Canada

Fatalities Reported In Crash Of Canadian Junior Hockey Team Bus

The North Bay and area hockey community is holding a candlelight vigil tonight for the victims of the tragic collision involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus and a transport truck in Saskatchewan, Friday.

Trudeau shares this message on Twitter following the crash: "I can not imagine what these parents are going through, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this bad tragedy, in the Humboldt community and beyond".

Saturday was the final night of the regular season for most of the National Hockey League's teams.

The cause of the accident remains unknown, but the incident has swept the country and the larger hockey world with grief.

Kevin Porter, the president of St. Albert Raiders hockey club, said Hunter "always had a smile on his face". I've been involved in this league for 42 years and I've never seen anything like it. He was remembered as a great hockey player and a smart kid with a great sense of humour. "I've been trying to keep it out of my mind but (the news) is all-around us now", said the Delta Secondary graduate.

"Again that connection that all hockey players have together, they go through that idea of travelling as a team, being part of a team". "Whether you like it or not, from my previous career (as a police officer), that's just life".

"He liked sports, but at times I think he tolerated sports so he could be a teammate", the father said in a phone interview with The Canadian Press.

"They wanted to play Junior A hockey since they were like five years old", she says.

My brother Doug played his junior hockey in Kamloops for two seasons before going to the NHL.

Fourteen people were also injured when the team bus collided with a tractor trailer at a highway intersection on Friday. "There was no one in the room that commanded more respect than Mark", Head Coach Russ Herrington said in the statement.

The 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team is pictured in this undated handout photo. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau flew to the hospital Sunday to visit the injured before heading to the city of Humboldt for a vigil.

Tragedies rarely strike when we expect it, and leave us feeling helpless, unable to reverse the unthinkable.

The team was on its way to Game 5 of a semifinal against the Nipawin Hawks, also in Saskatchewan, when the crash occurred around 5 p.m. CST.

President Donald Trump also tweeted his condolences.

A total of 15 people, including the team's coach and captain, were killed. He had recently been called up to play with the Broncos. At the end of the day, what we're going to do is what we think is right. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost so much, with their families and with all Canadians who grieve with them at this hard time".

Addressing a news conference on Saturday RCMP Saskatchewan Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki confirmed that the driver of the lorry was uninjured in the smash but had been briefly retained in custody afterwards.
