Facebook: Most Users Data Scraped By 'Malicious Actors'

Techcrunch reported late Thursday that it had spoken to multiple Facebook users who had exchanged messages with Zuckerberg on Facebook Messenger over the years.

Facebook may soon add a feature we have been waiting for.

Later, it emerged that the firm had accessed the information of as many as 87 million people.

With the current system standing, every message you send is stored on Facebook servers (and scanned by Facebooks bots), and deleting them only deletes it from your chat and device.

Additionally, Facebook has also announced that from now on Pages with a large number of followers will need to be verified in order to make it harder for people to administer a Page using a fake account. Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operation Officer (CEO) at Facebook and second in command after founder-owner Mark Zuckerberg, said that the company is doing audits, but cautioned that more data breaches could surface. The move also comes amid concerns that Russian-sponsored entities delivered Facebook ads designed to create discord and confusion ahead of the election and that firms like Cambridge Analytica created messages based on psychographic profiles gleaned from the platform to influence voters.

"We also think it's important for people to be able to see the other ads a page is running, even if they're not directed at you".

The social media giant who confirmed their action cited "corporate security" in wake of the massive email hack of Sony Pictures as the reason for the move, and wants to protect its executives' communications from hacks.

Ms Sandberg, in a separate interview with PBS, said: "We're not just open to regulations, we're moving ahead of it", and had built a tool which would be live before the next U.S. election and which would show details of who paid for election ads and demographics of the audience. That's not a power available to the rest of us, who can't delete messages we regret sending from other people's archives. The company doesn't have logs going back that far, he said, so it can not know exactly how many people may have been affected.

The social network is under intense pressure after the data of millions of its users ended up in the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.
