At the final whistle Pogba made a beeline to the United fans to celebrate before he caught the eye of Guardiola.

Ahead of a game of huge symbolic importance to Manchester United, Jose Mourinho looked to the past for solace.

Three points on Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

United's players will be sat at home twiddling their thumbs after bowing out to Sevilla in the previous round after a terrible Old Trafford defeat that was on par with their wretched first-half display at the Etihad Stadium.

Mourinho's United team has lacked the verve and determination of Ferguson's title-winning sides but he has justifiably argued that he has had to rebuild an imbalanced squad.

The former Barcelona coach said his team had paid the price for not taking their chances during a first half in which they dominated.

The start time for Manchester City vs Manchester United is at 10:00 PM IST.

The hosts went 2-0 ahead after half an hour through Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan, before Pogba's double and Chris Smalling's victor in the second half.

He added: "We had more ball than normally a team has against Manchester City so it was a question of keeping confident and waiting for a goal". Big game, big player, " a user wrote about the Manchester United No. 7. Nobody could have envisaged what would happen in the second half.

Speaking immediately after the game to Sky Sports, Mourinho smiled while saying that Pogba's performance at the Etihad would only fuel more speculation.

"The only thing I can say is that we want to win, we don't want to offer them the game". Following the worldwide break, the Chilean bagged only his second United goal versus Swansea, and he continued his good run of form with another strong second-half display against City. Again it was Pogba, who had been poor in the first half, who did the damage, rising to meet a deep Sanchez cross and angling his header into the bottom corner. He is everything that a Mourinho midfielder is not, in many ways. Romelu Lukaku's ability to be a focal point up front will be key, as will the pace of Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez either side.

Pogba's first goal was a simple finish after a well-timed run was picked out by Ander Herrera chesting a ball from Alexis Sanchez into his path.

Ferguson would often mockingly refer to the Etihad as the "Temple of Doom" during his reign in charge at Old Trafford - a jibe directed at City's perennial ability to self-destruct - but it has been more like a torture chamber for United in recent seasons.

Just 24 hours after Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola revealed he had been told by Pogba's agent that the France midfielder was for sale during the January transfer window, it was fitting that the United star was the spark for his side's victory.

Make no mistake, this is still Manchester City's season.

"Of course, two goals for a midfield player in a big match like this one stays in the memory of the people, especially the fans".

"You never see Paul hide".

The Red Devils, on the other hand, have not the best of outings in the Champions League as they were humbled by Sevilla in the Round of 16.
