Australia launches investigation into Facebook over data scandal

Facebook Messenger now offers a Secret Conversation mode where users can set a timer on when messages will be destroyed.

Facebook has never informed users that it had this sort of power, nor are regular users able to do the same thing. Though Facebook asked for the data to be anonymized, it reportedly wanted to implement cryptographic techniques that would allow the researchers to match data sets. Documents filed with the House and Senate shows Facebook spent more than US$17 million in 2017, much of it on an in-house lobbying team that is comprised of former Republican and Democratic political aides.

"If you won't tell us that or we don't think it's correct, we're not going let you run [an ad]", Sandberg continued, adding that Facebook will label all such ads as "political ads" and archive them with information on the money and individuals or groups behind each. "This may take some time", a Facebook spokesperson told Bloomberg. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives' messages.

"We've turned off this product feature globally and we're sorry for any confusion that it caused".

The news comes as Facebook VP Sheryl Sandberg said the company is still unable to confirm what happened to the data obtained by Cambridge Analytica, the data analytics firm hired by the Trump presidential campaign, because it needs to wait until the United Kingdom information commissioner completes an investigation.

Facebook is in full damage-control mode, with Mr Zuckerberg acknowledging he's made a "huge mistake" in failing to take a broad enough view of what Facebook's responsibility is in the world.

The 33-year-old multi-billionaire will now testify in front of Congress on April 11th.

"Do we really want to shut them down for doing that?"

The scraped information was limited to what a user had already chosen to make public - which, depending on a person's privacy settings, could be a lot - as well as what Facebook requires people to share.

Privacy advocates have always been critical of Facebook's penchant for pushing people to share more and more information, often through pro-sharing default options. There are also concerns that thousands of Australians were caught in the data drag net.

Facebook has been under pressure this week after admitting that it had "improperly shared" the personal data of 87 million users. This project would essentially hand Facebook even more personal data, this time containing personal health-related information.

Previously this week for an instance, Facebook ceased the ability to search people by their phone number on the platform, highlighting the fact that malicious actors had abused it to scrape data or attempt to access users' accounts.
