Palestinians Mass Protests on Gaza Border

Thousands of Palestinians took part in a mass protest along Gaza's volatile border with Israel, the second large-scale demonstration in what is expected to be a steady turnout over the coming weeks.

Israel's army says it will investigate the death of a Palestinian journalist shot during clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces on Gaza's border with Israel, local media report. This caps a week of the largest demonstrations and worst violence that Gaza has seen in years.

The Israeli army has launched an investigation into the incident, said the army in a statement.

Responsibility for land border crossings - in a coastal strip without a commercial sea port or airport - is crucial, as Palestinians and goods can only cross by these checkpoints.

The two main Palestinian parties - the Fatah faction of Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas and the Islamist militant group Hamas - have run separate governments in the West Bank and Gaza respectively since 2007. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and New Hampshire's representatives to publicly condemn Israel's violence against peaceful protesters. In a series of protest encampments, families fly kites and food trucks are parked to support the demonstration. Daniel said he heard gunfire and saw tear gas in the area immediately next to the border.

The Israeli military had dropped leaflets in the lead up to the protest instructing Palestinians to stay at least 300 meters away from the fence.

Israel has drawn sharp criticism for its open-fire orders along the border.

Many demonstrators stayed far back from the border fence, picnicking in the barley fields and holding a tent camp sit-in, but some young Palestinians burned tires and threw rocks toward the fence. The reporter was wearing a blue flak vest with the word "press" written across it, clearly identifying him as a member of the press, but that didn't stop an Israeli sniper from targeting him, hitting him with a bullet that would shortly claim his life. Hamas accused Israel of violating the 2015 UN Security Council Resolution 2222, addressing the protection of journalists, demanding a probe into his death.

The military released a video it said showed the man sneaking up on the fence under the cover of darkness. It follows accusations from the United Nations' human rights office that it has indications of Israeli forces using "excessive force" the previous week.

Years of Israeli and Egyptian blockades and wars have contributed to a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Gazans get only a few hours of electricity every day and have extremely limited water.

Unemployment is approaching 50 percent, according to official Palestinian figures.

Hamas had billed the final protest, set for May 15, as the "Great March of Return" of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, implying they would try to enter Israel, but they had stopped short of specifically threatening a mass breach of the fence.

"Palestinians said last week when the protest began, hundreds were injured by Israeli fire". Israel's military said some 20,000 Palestinians were "rioting" and "attempts were made to infiltrate into Israel under the cover of a smoke screen".

The European Union on Saturday said the deaths of Palestinian protesters in violence along the Gaza border a day earlier "raise serious questions about proportionate use of force" by Israel.
