United Kingdom regulator probing Facebook over data use in political campaigning

The company says it has been removing Zuckerberg's messages from the inboxes of various people for several years. The company apologized for not doing so sooner.

Facebook first acknowledged last month that personal information about millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica.

Sandberg added that the company was having reassuring conversations about how it has built privacy into its system and said that despite the scandal they will not stop working with political advertisers.

Facebook will also need to approve all apps that request access to information such as check-ins, likes, photos, posts, videos, events and groups. The requirement for issue ads is new. You can also prevent someone finding your Facebook account through a Google search. The company did not specify what number of followers would trigger the requirement.

"Transparency and accountability must be considered, otherwise it will be impossible to rebuild trust in the way that personal information is obtained, used and shared online", said Denham.

Facebook shares closed up 2.7 per cent at $159.35.

According to multiple reports, Facebook sent a doctor to several USA hospitals in the hopes of convincing them to share patient data with the social media giant. This new change is due to the current Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, which has sent users asking questions about their information.

The privacy of more than 5 lakh Indian users of Facebook was compromised by the company which later sold the data to Cambridge Analytica. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg is due to testify about the issue at congressional hearings next week.
