Facebook enhancing security features, big focus on India 2019 elections: Mark Zuckerberg

An Update on Our Plans to Restrict Data Access on Facebook | Facebook Newsroom

"The amount of compensation will depend on the level of distress suffered, but Facebook could be facing claims of up to GBP 500 (USD 700) per Facebook user if those users were able to demonstrate their distress". And for good reason.

Yet she said the company does not know whether political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which used Facebook data to target voters in the run-up to the 2016 elections, still possesses user data from the company, and if so, what the data is. Notably, this information was only revealed after scrolling through a blog post by Facebook's Chief Technology Officer, Mike Schroepfer on the company's plans to restrict data access on Facebook. But his post also reassured Facebook account holders of how this massive breach would never take place again.

To remedy the problem, Zuckerberg said Facebook must "rethink our relationship with people across everything we do" and that it will take a number of years to regain user trust.

The company has also admitted letting data harvesters use their search feature in similar ways to a reverse phonebook. However, some had misused this.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Love Both campaign said that pro-life groups were wary of Facebook introducing "censorship" during the referendum campaign. That was being used by malicious actors to scrape public profile information. According to the social media platform, this was achieved by dropping in phone numbers or emails into the search box, leading them to profiles that popped up. Going forward, all third-party apps using the Groups API will need approval from Facebook and an admin to ensure they benefit the group.

Terming 2018 a "big year" for elections, Zuckerberg said Facebook was enhancing its security features to prevent trolls from spreading information.

"I think we need to take a broader view of our responsibility", Mr Zuckerberg said.

Recently, some users were outraged to find out that their phones' call and text history was being saved to their Facebook accounts even though they didn't remember ever agreeing to that.

Federal Trade Commission: Tom Pahl, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, says the agency's probe will include whether the company engaged in "unfair acts" that cause "substantial injury" to consumers. A spokeswoman later clarified that the data on friends who were not direct users of the app was passed along in adherence with their privacy settings, sharing only public information.

Facebook is to start telling users whose data has been compromised on Monday.

But hackers and scam artists could then use that information - and combine it with other data in circulation - to pull hoaxes on people, plant malware on their computers or commit other mischief.

Overall, we believe these changes will better protect people's information while still enabling developers to create useful experiences.

"In this particular instance, a number of people reported receiving these messages which prompted us to begin investigating", a spokesperson said.
