How Lehmann spirit hurt Aussie cricket

Lehmann was hailed as a saviour when he took over in 2013

Disgraced former Australian cricket vice-captain David Warner has broken his silence on his role in the ball-tampering scandal that's shocked the cricketing world. He said that while he was "embarrassed" and "disappointed", the players simply made a grave mistake.

Well, in all worlds, what Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft has done in the ball-tampering episode is wrong, but their apology will move you.

"In Darren's defence, I do want to clarify that matter", Sutherland told reporters in response to a question about what Lehmann told 12th man Peter Handscomb via walky talky before he ran on the field to pass the coach's message onto Bancroft.

Sutherland then said: "On behalf of Cricket Australia, I want to apologise to all Australians that these events have taken place, especially to all kids who love cricket and idolise the players". But because cricket is the only sport that truly unites every state for a full season, the ball-tampering scandal has been a hot topic among mates, at schools and around family dinner tables.

"All I can do in the short term is ask for forgiveness", he said, while denying he had ever tampered with a ball before, in comments echoed by Smith.

"Despite generational change, independent reviews and too many behavioural spot fires to list, Cricket Australia and the national team had demonstrated no real willingness or desire to improve the culture within their organisation from season to season".

The incident took place during South Africa's innings on Saturday afternoon when Bancroft was seen on television holding a small yellow object while rubbing the rough side of the ball, before hiding the object in his pocket, then inside his pants.

Warner, a divisive figure in the world game, has become the focus of Australian media, who blame him for the scandal. "I'm sorry." Smith said.

A Cricket Australia investigator found that Warner instructed Bancroft how to carry out the tampering with a piece of sandpaper during a break in play on the third day of the third test against South Africa.

"After viewing Steve and Cameron's hurting, it's only fair that I make this decision", said a tearful Lehmann.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine has been named as captain for the rest of the series.

Smith was already jeered by the South African fans at the airport while heading home.

But today he has made a decision to step down once the final Test against South Africa finishes on Tuesday.

Underlining the extent of the damage to Australia's reputation, the Cricket Australia bans were far more serious than punishments handed out by the International Cricket Council. Speaking in Johannesburg soon after Lehmann's announcement, Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive James Sutherland said he wanted to pay tribute to the coach. I'm the captain. It was on my watch.

CA said Bancroft, who has played just eight Tests, had illegally attempted to "artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper".

Cricket Australia has also confirmed Australia will play a two-test and ODI series against Sri Lanka beginning in December. However, he did admit he needed to look at how Australia approached their cricket and looked at New Zealand as a good example.
