The military fears that Palestinian masses will try to breach the border fence during the demonstrations.

He insisted that the demonstrators will stay 700 meters away from the fence of the borders to "avoid any confrontation and guarantee a success of our mission and succeed to send our message to the world".

An Israeli-Egyptian blockade, along with three wars with Israel and a series of sanctions by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, had left Gaza's economy in tatters.

The two weeks are known in the Palestinian community as the "March for Return", and organizers have promised it will remain peaceful.

The Palestinian march will take place on Land Day - an annual commemoration of the killing of six unarmed Arab citizens by Israeli forces during demonstrations over government land confiscations in 1976.

"In response, IDF tanks targeted two observation posts belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip". Hamas chose "Land Day", a day when Palestinians traditionally protest Israel's presence in the Middle East, to launch their March of Return.

Hamas officials said they were preparing to accuse specific parties in Ramallah within a few days of announcing the end of the probe into the assassination attempt, which deepened Palestinian divisions.

"We won't allow mass infiltration into Israel" or damage to the border barrier, he told the Yediot Aharonot newspaper.

Violent skirmishes are expected even before May 15.

Hamas denied reports rockets had been fired into Israel after Israel media had reported that Iron Dome had intercepted a number of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. Asked if he has a message for the Israeli public, al-Kurd answered in the affirmative: "We are reaching out to them, holding an olive branch". From nonviolent marches to boycotts to global pressure campaigns, Israel's position has always been that there is no legitimate form of Palestinian resistance to the occupation. Protesters say the event is a wake-up call and a reminder that Palestinians will always defend their land by all possible means in the face of Israeli occupation and violence.
