Mark Zuckerberg's Mentor: Crisis of Trust Threatens to 'Destroy the Company'

Facebook's Currency Devalued Along With User Trust

The New York Times and The Observer of London have reported U.S. President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign hired a data-analytics company that harvested private information from the Facebook profiles of more than 50 million users. And a Canadian is at

Facebook's stock plummeted this week following news that Cambridge Analytica misused 50 million Facebook users' data.

However, while deactivating your account hides some of your information, it does not permanently delete your data, as you can log back in to find your account as you have left it.

Facebook also employs a small army of outside lobbyists.

- On being asked about whether the #DeleteFacebook campaign has resulted in a meaningful number of people deleting their accounts, Zuckerberg said, "I don't think we've seen a meaningful number of people act on that, but, you know, it's not good". But the social network has implemented multiple measures over the years to make sure that nefarious companies like Cambridge Analytica don't misuse its users' data. If a quiz app asks for all of your timeline data, including photos, comments, likes, shares, and profile information, most people may just click "OK" because they want to take the quiz, without realizing the implications of their agreement. It is against our policies for developers to share data without people's consent, so we immediately banned Kogan's app from our platform, and demanded that Kogan and Cambridge Analytica formally certify that they had deleted all improperly acquired data.

A spokesman for Leave.EU, Aaron Banks, denied the claim, saying that his group did not receive any data or work from Cambridge Analytica.

This is valuable, predictive information, which Kogan later provided to Cambridge Analytica.

There was a feeling, said one of the people, that Facebook wanted to take aggressive steps to make sure it could regain user trust.

The New York Times and the Observer of London first exposed the privacy-bending caper.

Addressing the FT Future of News conference, Campbell Brown, head of news partnerships at Facebook, said: "If it were me I would have probably not threatened to sue the Guardian", adding it was "not our wisest move".

In a lengthy post on Facebook on Wednesday, Zuckerberg outlined a timeline of events which lead to what he called "a breach of trust". "This was a major breach of trust and I'm really sorry that this happened", Zuckerberg said in a television interview with CNN. Zuckerberg said he had "probably launched more products that have failed than most people will in their lifetime". "That's the commitment that I try to have inside our company, and for our community".

The warning was the result of the attack on Congress by BJP as the former is accused of hiring Cambridge Analytica for harvesting users' private data without their knowledge. However, the company also suspended CEO Alexander Nix pending an investigation.

Zuckerberg said this week he would be willing to testify if he is the right person at the company to speak to lawmakers.

One of Facebook's critics over data privacy is Brian Acton, the co-founder of WhatsApp.

The company, funded in part by Trump supporter and billionaire financier Robert Mercer, paired its vault of consumer data with voter information.
