David Warner clashes with South African fan after whirlwind cameo in Cape Town

Elgar carries bat as South Africa make 311

Less than three weeks after Warner's ugly row with de Kock in Durban, the vice-captain was shadowed up the stairs towards the players' viewing area following his exit in Australia's first innings at the hands of Kagiso Rabada.

Morkel, who is retiring from global cricket after the series, took three of the first four Australia wickets to fall and became the fifth South Africa player to join the 300 club.

Things seem to be boiling over into particularly unsavoury territory in the third Test at Newlands, with Cricket Australia lodging a formal complaint with Cricket South Africa (CSA).

Elgar had earlier carried his bat for 141 (284 balls, 20 fours and a six) to join the West Indies Great, Desmond Haynes, as the only player to do this on three occasions.

Despite an unbeaten 121 from Dean Elgar, South Africa were on a shaky 266 for eight at the close in a pivotal match in the bad-tempered four-Test series.

Although ten other fielders shared the record, Smith was only the second Australian to achieve the feat after Vic Richardson in 1935/36.

Rabada had the last laugh, though, sending Warner's off stump cartwheeling away after a terrific ball.

It looked like being a poor day for the tourists when, in response to South Africa's 311, they were reduced to 8-175 in the final session on Friday (local time).

Morne Morkel, who took his 300th Test wicket on day two, stopped short of criticising the Newlands crowd, and stated he had been on the receiving end of abuse from crowds in Australia.

Ground officials confirmed the spectator involved in Friday's encounter was evicted from the ground, as were other fans in the Railway Stand for singing songs that mentioned Warner's wife.

Australia are unhappy over what they believe were a number of personal attacks by supporters on players that crossed the boundaries of decency in a series that has seen heated incidents on the pitch.

Warner exchanged words with a supporter as he trudged off and Australia were 72-3 with Usman Khawaja and captain Smith falling for five apiece to Morkel either side of lunch.

But an approaching interval did its trick again, this time the tea break falling as Bancroft fell, leg before for 77 in an eventual reward for a day's fine bowling by Vernon Philander.

Australia sunk deeper into the mire when Rabada (3-81) returned to claim the wickets of Pat Cummins (4) and Mitchell Starc (2), both caught by AB de Villiers at third slip.

Philander left the field after he suffered what team management said was whiplash when diving at mid-on to try and take a catch Lyon offered off Morkel.

"It's been a very topsy-turvy game, hasn't it?" smiled Australian opener Cameron Bancroft when speaking to ABC Grandstand after play.
