New Zealand 175-3, lead England by 117

Rain offers England brief respite after Williamson century

The Black Caps batsman belted 181 not out to claim the fourth ODI in Dunedin

It was embarrassing and it was pathetic.

In contrast, not only did Williamson bat on a different planet to the rest, but he pulled off a catch that belonged in a different galaxy, diving one-handed in the gully to remove Stuart Broad as England hit rock-bottom at 27-9.

By the close, the Kiwis had reached 175-3 in reply to England's paltry total.

To bat: BJ Watling, Colin de Grandhomme, Todd Astle, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.

England were knocked over for a paltry 58 but had it not been for a 25 ball unbeaten 33 from number nine Craig Overton it would have been a whole lot worse.

With fine weather forecast for the remainder of the Test, Thorpe has dismissed the idea of a first innings post-mortem examination and put the emphasis on England looking forward to save the Test. "They've got to go back out there and they've got another innings and they've got to get back in the fight".

Kane Williamson's adaptability is the key to his record-breaking batting achievements, says Michael Atherton.

"As a swing bowler it's hard to take because it's hard to swing a ball that isn't round".

Downpours disrupted much of the second day's play with only 23.1 overs bowled, the BBC reports.

Mark Stoneman was another to nick off and then Stokes' stumps were shattered by Boult.

Because the Black Caps bowled England out for 58 on the first afternoon, they are so far ahead in this match that losing all this time to rain hasn't really changed their task that much. Moeen Ali missed a Southee yorker and was bowled.

England coach Trevor Bayliss admitted to being embarrassed by his side's technical failings against a slightly swinging ball, which resulted in a collapse of such momentum that the team was unable to stop it.

"It was a very poor effort today, it just simply wasn't good enough", Bayliss said, at the end of one of the worst days in England Test history.

"The rain has probably helped us a little bit". When one person sneezes it seems that we all catch a cold.

"We've been on the other side of scores like that and it's euphoria. This is the opposite". We didn't make too many right decisions with our footwork. The ball nipped around and you could see why a team could be skittled on a morning like that. Is it something in our preparation?

"We've got to sit down and have a good chat about it".

On a blameless pitch but against brilliant swing bowling, it seemed a long shot at one point that they could get anywhere near beating their own historical low of 45 all out against Australia in Sydney in 1887.
