Border Wall Rising: Trump To Inspect Prototypes

President Trump says immigrants trying to cross Mexico border 'are like professional mountain climbers'

President Donald Trump made a long-expected visit to the Otay Mesa port of entry in San Diego, California, on Tuesday to visit eight prototypes of the wall he has promised to build along the US-Mexico border. Demonstrators on each side carried signs and shouted. Hundreds of people are expected to take part. One hoisted a Trump flag and others raised middle fingers. Trump on Tuesday inspected prototypes on display in California for his "big, handsome border wall".

The scene was quiet on both sides of the border Tuesday morning as Trump flew to San Diego. Tens of thousands of people enter the US daily from Tijuana, Mexico, many on their way to work or school in San Diego. Drivers honked as a show of support.

Trump's visit brings him to the home turf of the resistance movement against his presidency.

Among Trump's supporters, Kira Innis, 31, said she was backing Trump "because he doesn't give a good gosh darn about somebody's color, he cares about putting more green in their pocket". The agency selected six contractors and eight wall designs. However, San Diego saw activists already gathering Monday evening, and protests are planned on both sides of the border at the site where Trump will view border wall prototypes.

He added: "The state of California is begging us to build walls in certain areas, they won't tell you that, but we said no we won't do it until we build the whole wall".

"It's really important that as a region, as a city that has firsthand understanding of what the border wall means for our communities that we stand against (this) and we send a strong message to DC to say this is something that we don't welcome", City Councilwoman Georgette Gomez said on Monday. "Maybe more than that".

On his way to the viewing, Mr Trump tweeted: "California's sanctuary policies are illegal and unconstitutional and put the safety and security of our entire nation at risk". Trump and the Department of Justice said that California was "obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts" and filed the lawsuit. "That's what exactly is happening. It has to do with the culture in Mexico and the people, more than the wall", shared Fernando Toscano, a resident of Mexico. Trump has insisted Mexico pay for the wall but Mexico has adamantly refused to consider the idea. Trump will make his first visit to the city since being elected. And this apparently happened on the day when President Trump is flying to San Diego meaning there was extraordinary security in place. He crosses the border from Mexico daily to work at a San Diego restaurant.

Trump had campaigned against NAFTA as a job killer that he said encouraged American companies to move factories to Mexico to exploit cheap labour. Renegotiations over the deal began last summer.

It's a state he lost big, and recently targeted for not cooperating on immigration.

He said he had seen estimates that the "intolerably high" illegal immigration costs came to $100 billion a year in terms of drugs, crime, education and social services. He is expected to travel aboard the Marine One helicopter through out his visit in San Diego.

State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, led a Monday afternoon rally in Beverly Hills in advance of Trump's visit, denouncing the president's plans for a border wall and his immigration stances.

The White House has called for $18 billion in funding for the wall's construction, but that demand has remained in limbo after the administration sought to pair it with a deal to grant legal status to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.
