British Columbia will be well represented at the 2018 Paralympics in South Korea

A general view of the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Paralympic Games at the Pyeongchang Stadium, South Korea, March 9, 2018.

Lee Hee-beom, the top organizer of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics, said Friday he hoped the quadrennial competition will help create a society "without discrimination or prejudice".

The Paralympics are to run from March 9 until March 18.

Japan complained to South Korea about followers waving the Korean peninsula flag at a pleasant girls's ice hockey match within the Olympics between the mixed North and South Korean crew and Sweden.

Although the Games for people with disabilities is independent from the Olympics, they will use numerous same venues and discuss numerous same issues. "I am so excited to lead the team and to know that all our supporters, especially my family, are watching us back in New Zealand will make the honour extraordinarily special".

Among the athletes are 30 neutral competitors from Russian Federation, which remains suspended by the IPC over a mass doping scandal.

But an IPC decision on the eve of the event has brought further controversy. "Her name appears in the McLaren report.Lysova is under suspicion of manipulation".

"We are not rewarding Russian Federation but we are allowing athletes that we believe are clean to compete under a neutral flag", IPC president Andrew Parsons said.

"It was hard for me to train for this sport, but I think everyone has something that fits to his or her talents", he said. He talked of the process which the IOC had begun in 2014 to get the athletes from the National Olympic Committee of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to the Olympic Winter Games.

The Russian Paralympic Committee was praised for fulfilling other criteria which also required it to tighten up enforcement of drug-testing rules and distance itself from what the IPC called government "propaganda".

It followed comments by US Vice-President Mike Pence, who said in Tokyo on his arrival in Asia to attend the Opening Ceremony that they planned to introduce the "toughest and most aggressive" sanctions yet against North Korea.

He added that "having North Korea participate in Pyeongchang 2018 is a great step forward for the Paralympic movement". In his opening address Parsons emphasized the dreams of the record number of Paralympians in attendance. Even the 310,000 tickets could be sold out completely and the IPC is considering putting extra tickets on sale.

The flag without Dokdo was used when the two nations marched together at the Olympic Opening Ceremony on February 9, according to Yonhap.
