Ireland's Six Nations win a "strange feeling"

Schmidt slams critics of Ireland's style

Joe Schmidt's men had beaten Scotland 28-8 in Dublin earlier in the day, crucially running in four tries to pile the pressure on England ahead of their clash in Paris.

But the English were sloppy, uninspired in attack, and dominated at the breakdown. They conceded too many penalties, 16 altogether, and were outwitted at the breakdown.

"England today, because they are trying to play so much shape with the out-the-back passes, there isn't a lot of physicality to how they are playing".

"We did not learn quick enough", Jones said. We're never going to get that game back. But you get nothing at the start of the game next week at Twickenham, you have to start all over again and win it and these players will try to do that. A year on from England's 13-9 defeat by Ireland in Dublin, their first loss under Jones, that game seems to have been a clear watershed in the fortunes of both teams.

Just weeks ago it was completely socially acceptable to hold the opinion that England wouldn't be able to lose to the All Blacks, but Jones has showed that they could very easily lose such a match, even by a handsome score.

France's centre Gael Fickou (L) runs with the ball during the Six Nations global rugby union match between France and England at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, on March 10, 2018.

"I wanted the team to be close to the best during the tournament", France coach Jacques Brunel said. England are still faltering, looking for the sure footing they had before they tripped in that match.

France came back with a move ignited by captain Guilhem Guirado, who took them into the English 22.

Flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc added: "They hit a wall".

The Scots are now ranked fifth in the world after a run of good form that saw them upset visiting England 25-13 recently in the Six Nations competition.

Although the infraction appeared accidental, with Fall diving low for the line, referee Jaco Peyper appeared to have little option but to sin-bin the England full-back.

"The biggest problem of all was the huge penalty count against England: 16 in total", insisted Woodward, who guided England to 2003 World Cup final glory against an Australia side coached by Jones.

When Slimani was then penalised for another scrum offence, Wasps man Elliot Daly stepped up to boot a superb three-pointer from halfway and put England 6-0 up.

Jacob Stockdale became the first Irishman to claim six tries in a single Five or Six Nations competition with a brace against the Scots.

England, on the other hand, were a metre from the French line on the last play of their game but coughed up the ball.

"We're very proud of how the team played but there is a realisation that we have more work to do", Townsend said.

"The last thing they'll want is to let us win a grand slam in Twickenham next week, so obviously we're going to hopefully get the championship presented to us next week in Twickenham, but it'll take a bit of gloss off it if we don't do the grand slam".
