"If a walkout occurs, schools and classes will continue on their normal schedule", said Wednesday's notification.

The National School Walkout to protest gun violence is taking place at hundreds of locations throughout the U.S. Some schools have vowed not to support the protest, according to USA Today.

The National School Walkout is planned for March 14, the one-month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

School administrators knew about the walkout ahead of time and did not discipline students for participating. They hope to release full details to parents by Friday.

"School is about teaching, learning, and developing the future leaders of our community, state, and nation", McCarter said in his memo.

"A lot of kids would use it just to get out of class", Long said.

"Though I strongly support everyone's right to protest, students included, these protests have no place in our schools", said Representative White.

Other principals said they did not expect a similar protest to occur at their schools. She said Principal Scott Ferguson is coordinating with students to provide them 17 minutes of speaking time in the school library.

In an earlier statement provided to DE 105.9, the district said various staff members and administrators would be with students during the protest and that they viewed this as an opportunity for students to "participate in the democratic process of peaceful protest".

Many students say they oppose arming teachers in school, and some staged a "die-in" at the state capitol during this final week of the legislative session. It is being organized by "a collective of teenage activists in cities across the country who work to organize our peers to take action on the issues we marched for on January 21, 2017", according to Senior Claire Boone will give a speech to close the event and students will then go back to their second block class.

On Feb. 28 Colleen Ellis, a BHS junior, announced to the Barnstable School Committee the formation of the Cape Cod Student Council specifically in response to the Parkland killings.

"This is about the First Amendment and being able to say how you feel", Morse said. "Whether they come from a school as big as Stoneman Douglas or as small as Chimacum, we all have a voice".

Weinhold said while little interest has been shown, if students walkout they will be asked to stay out of the road and protest in a certain area of the school.

"We are walking out for all people who have experienced gun violence, including systemic forms of gun violence that disproportionately impact teens in Black and Brown communities".
