Donald Trump set to launch largest ever set of sanctions against North Korea
While en route to attending the South Korean Olympics, Vice President Mike Pence had telegraphed Friday's actions by declaring that the US would soon impose the "toughest and most aggressive sanctions yet".
Earlier Friday, Trump announced the "heaviest sanctions ever imposed" against North Korea, part of what the White House bills as a "maximum pressure" campaign against the North.
North Korea announced in November it had successfully conducted a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the USA mainland.
Highlighting the oppression of North Korea is commendable, but the US must follow strong rhetoric with strong actions.
The sanctions come amid the latest détente between the two Koreas during the PyeongChang Olympics.
Addressing guests seated at an elaborately-set round table, Ms Trump swapped hats in her role as one of her father's close advisers, and turned to politics.
"We are releasing new imagery of the deceptive shipping practices used by those who aid and profit from illicit trade with North Korea".
"Under current hard circumstances, we have chose to focus on whether peace on the Korean Peninsula and improvement in inter-Korean relations can be derived from dialogue with [the visiting North Korean officials], not on their past or who they are", Unification Ministry Baik Tae-hyun said in a media briefing. It was the first North Korean attack on a civilian area in South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. In January Washington announced a round of sanctions and urged China and Russian Federation to expel North Koreans raising funds for the programs.
The government said that the new sanctions are not meant to punish North Korea, but instead, send a message to countries that did business with it.
"They also discussed the continued effort on the joint maximum pressure campaign against North Korea". "We are going to be continuing in that form. China's tough. They're getting stronger".
She claimed USA success in steering three rounds of successively tighter global sanctions at the UN Security Council over the past year. "It really is a rogue nation", he said.
"There is no daylight between us", Risch said of the stance against North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.
The secretary also said he would not rule out that North Korean ships could be boarded and inspected for illicit trade in the future.
On the new sanctions list, the entities listed that are based in China and Hong Kong include: Shangdong-based Weihai World-Shipping Freight, Shanghai-based Shanghai Dongfeng Shipping Co Ltd., Hong Kong-based shipping companies Liberty Shipping Co.
Chinese and North Korean vessels were spotted carrying out ship-to-ship transfers of oil just two days ago.
That practice is prohibited under the latest United Nations sanctions imposed in September following North Korea's most recent underground nuclear tests.
In addressing the Trump administration's biggest national security challenge, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned one person, 27 companies and 28 ships, according to a statement on the U.S. Treasury Department's website.
All of them are involved in sanctions evasion schemes, he said.
It also maintains worldwide prohibitions against port entry for many North Korean vessels.
Reuters was unable to reach Tsang or his companies, Pro-Gain Group Corporation and Kingly Won International Company Ltd, for comment.
In October the United States proposed eight ships for U.N. designation for smuggling banned cargo from North Korea.
Beijing has warned against a full oil embargo on the North over fears of Kim Jong Un's regime collapsing.
