Senate GOP, Dem leaders say it's time for immigration deal

FAIR PROCESS’ U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell above will introduce a ‘shell’ bill on immigration reform then allow all senators including Jeff Flake to propose amendments

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley filed a bill Wednesday, backed by Cornyn and others, that the White House quickly embraced.

Trump indicated he would reject any temporary extension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that he is seeking to end next month.

The plan both expands on Mr. Trump's security proposals - E-Verify and a crackdown on repeat-illegal immigrants were not explicitly part of the president's framework - while also making changes to ensure that overall legal immigration numbers aren't reduced.

But even as White House aides framed any alternatives as unworkable bills that Trump would not sign into law, a group of senators, the Common Sense Coalition, led by Sen.

"They are not a priority for deportation", he told reporters.

"And if they don't that", he says, "then the Dreamers are going to still be in difficulty".

The White House backs a proposal by Sen.

Trump, meanwhile, does not want to anger his supporters who cheered his push to limit immigration.

"That includes opposing any short-term "Band-Aid" approach", he said.

Among those points are restricting the visa lottery and spending millions to build a border wall.

But it appears unlikely to get 60 votes, which would include the support of at least nine Democratic senators.

The group of about 25 senators has been meeting privately, including Wednesday morning.

"You're down to what most Americans would cheer: strong border security and fair treatment of 1.8 million DACA population", said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, referring to the young immigrants.

But White House officials argued that the Grassley package already represents a significant compromise, pointing to "dramatic concessions" like the proposed pathway to citizenship for nearly 2 million people brought to the country illegally as children and the jettisoning of some immigration enforcement measures, like a nationwide E-Verify system, that were included in the White House's original immigration proposal last fall.

Ending the program would prevent immigrants who are "far better educated than USA -born Americans" and who "work in managerial and professional occupations" from coming to the United States. Ted Cruz of Texas signaling he may oppose the pathway to citizenship.

The Senate's Republican leadership set tomorrow as the deadline for striking a deal, and today was shaping up to be a day of consequential votes in the chamber on competing immigration plans, including the president's.

"We know that this week will be a test of whether the Senate can steer the ship of state through the stormiest waters", Schumer said.

Trump rescinded the Obama-era program a year ago and set an arbitrary deadline of March 5 that has spurred one of the issues at the divisive core of the Republican's presidency to the forefront of Washington's agenda.

"The task at hand is to protect Dreamers, and Congress must not do so by slashing the Diversity Visa program", the letter states. One is a bipartisan effort from Sen.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., also unveiled a modified version of the bipartisan measure.

Mark Walker, a North Carolina Republican, said anything that is more generous than the Goodlatte bill is going to face a tough road in the House. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would ban federal funding for so-called "sanctuary cities".
