That's a tiny proportion of Amazon's close to 300,000 US -based employees, but rare for a company that unlike many, seldom undergoes large cuts. Some employees have already been informed, while others will be told in the coming weeks, a source told the newspaper.

Amazon is eliminating hundreds of jobs in order to shift its resources to businesses that are fast growing.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to be an important part of the company's overall revenue.

Also earlier this month, Amazon reported its largest ever profit in history of almost $2bn, particularly helped by luring customers to its Prime fast-shipping club.

Recent moves, including these layoffs, point to Amazon's move away from consumer retail, as in creating and selling its own merchandise.

Amazon is still furiously hiring on other fronts.

Amazon now employees 40,000 at its headquarters - a relatively small part of its worldwide labor force of more than a half million people.

Amazon's headcount grew rapidly past year, up 66 percent from 2016.

Meanwhile, Amazon is also reportedly considering locations for a second headquarters in the North American region, where it plans to employ around 50,000 full-time workers, with many in high-paying office jobs.

Shares of the online retailer were up 3.6 percent on Monday afternoon.

The company hired 130,000 people worldwide a year ago, with its full-time and part-time headcount rising 66% from 2016 to 566,000 in 2017.

It appears the company isn't looking to reduce its overall headcount.

Many companies wait until it's too late to perform vital restructuring efforts but Amazon isn't most companies.

Amazon confirmed the layoffs in a statement sent to CNN.

Almost 4,000 corporate jobs are open in Greater Seattle and 12,000 worldwide. Some employees have been notified, while others will be notified later in the week.
