Michelle Obama's Portrait Milly Dress Sends a Powerful Political Message

14 Febrero 2018, 07:48 | Crisanna Felipe

Wrapped in symbolism, portraits of the Obama generate reactions found

Former President Barack Obama right and artist Kehinde Wiley left unveil the Obamas’ official portraits at the Smithsonian's National Portrait in Washington

Some memers, who seem to remember someone named "Sean Spicer", compared Barack's portrait to the infamous tale of Spicer evading reporters "near" (not in!) the bushes. Wiley is well-known for his depictions of African Americans in grandiose settings, and Obama joked that he had to ask him to tone it down for the piece.

Judith and Holofernes is from Wiley's most recent body of work and his first series of paintings to feature female subjects. The background is filled with lush greenery with bright-colored flowers in various places. "And the paintings I create aspire to express these attributes-a message of humanity".

Smith told Glamour that she had worked with Michelle's stylist, Meredith Koop, many times during the Obama presidency and had received a special request for the gown in Michelle's portrait.

"I'm thinking of all the girls of colour who will come and see someone who looks like them hanging on the wall of this great American Institution", said the former USA first lady. "This is why Sherald and Wiley were chosen", she added of the artists. "It really came down to, 'OK, Kehinde, you really do a type of transformation".

Conservative critic Ed Morrissey of HotAir commented Monday: "Both of the Obamas deserved better than what we saw today, whether they truly enjoyed these or were just trying their best to be gracious about it". What happens when you're painting the head of the free world?

At the Smithsonian unveiling, Michelle Obama and the forty-four-year-old Sherald together pulled down brown wraps to expose a painting of shocking mystery. She praised Sherald, who "was fly and poised and hip and cool", and who won her over with focused resolve.

"Ok, now draw me like I'm sitting in a large hedge".

A decade later we can see how tough that act was to follow - for a president, for a painter and for a voting public.

However, the Obamas are an unprecedented couple and they continue to break new ground in terms of representation and whom they entrust to represent them. (Until relatively recently, she maintained a side job waiting tables at a restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland.) Michelle Obama appears seated, wearing a sleeveless white dress with several geometric, quilt-like patterns. Quadrants of color-coded seats sorted Gallery staff (yellow) and Media (blue) from Friends (red). "No one had so I did". "She's one of my assistants".

Despite the famous subjects, both artists say their portraits are consistent with their established style. His portrait is housed in another room of the Gallery, but under the same roof of those who show George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who once owned slaves.

But ultimately, it presents something new.

"I had to explain that I've got enough political problems without you making me look like Napoleon", he said.

Barton Girdwood produced the broadcast version of this story.
