Home fans take high-flying Kim to their hearts

'California girl that went to Olympics' wins gold medal in women's halfpipe

"I hate crying but I'll give myself a pass for this one", Kim tweeted.

America just won its third gold medal (and sixth overall) at the 2018 Winter Olympics! If you've followed her recently, you've seen her talking about eating churros, wanting pineapple pizza ... not exactly the foods of her ancestors.

She made a decision to go for back-to-back 1080's, a feat she was the first woman to land, on her second run in hopes of improving her score and ensuring the gold, but didn't land it.

Kim became a fan favorite on Twitter after tweeting about churro, ice cream and a breakfast sandwich during her competition.

"I'm super happy, because now this stupid question has gone away", Hirscher said after his win, "Now the question is Zzzzzzztt".

Chloe is one of the most anticipated athletes here at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, due to her extraordinary performances in global competitions, including her two gold medals at the 2015 Youth Olympic Games.

What is clear is that life will never be the same for Chloe Kim, snowboarding's new rock star.

"I knew that I did put down a really good first run, but I was also like, 'I can do better than that". "This has been a long journey", she said. Heck, her Instagram following almost doubled, to 350,000, since she arrived in South Korea - and that was before she won the gold.

Japanese short-track speedskater Kei Saito tested positive for the banned diuretic Acetalozamide in the first doping case of the Pyeongchang Games. The medal ceremonies at these Winter Games have been held hours after some events. "And today, I really did it for my family and everything they've done for me". China's Liu Jiayu improved on her first run score pulling in a 89.75 and second place. But halfpipes are hard, the snow is slippery and nothing is for sure. Mr. Kim was in the audience holding a sign that read "Go Chloe" with hearts drawn on it.

All the same, it seems like she'll keep winning. On her first trip down she listened to "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga and scored a 93.75, ESPN reports.

"We celebrate diversity at the IOC and that's something that's hopefully fundamental to what we want in Olympic values", she said. "And I can't wait to go shopping with her".

Quintanilla: "Olympics or X Games?" Rather than playing it safe, she went for it.

Pointing to himself, Kim Jong-jin said, according to The Associated Press.

It came as no surprise that she added a few more titles and broke records in PyeongChang.

Fellow American Arielle Gold took the bronze medal and joined Kim on the podium. Kim turned her coronation into an exclamation point, stomping a pair of 1080 spins (three complete turns), then practically diving into a hug with American teammate and bronze medal victor Arielle Gold to seal a moment four years in the making. Bad conditions had shortened the women's snowboard slopestyle event one day earlier, and athletes said their performances were affected by the strong gusts. American Ted Ligety, the gold medalist in Torino 2006, finished fifth.

Kim was born in the United States after her parents immigrated from Korea. She didn't score a 100, but her 98.25 beat her previous score, which was what she was aiming to do all along. But she should for sure skip that song from now on, she fell trying to land back to back 1080s.

Regular mortals are often fascinated by what elite athletes eat to fuel their bodies as they try to do what no one else can.

It wasn't the first food-related tweet Kim has sent out while competing in Pyeongchang 2018.

"Let's do this thing!"

Arguably the best part of this story however, is the reaction Chloe evoked in her family following her historical victory. With her new medal, the celebration will be a family affair.

She drilled her opening set, throwing in a 1080 - basically, three twists high above the pipe - before following it with a pair of flips (or "corks").
