The special ANC national executive committee meeting announced on Sunday morning for Monday was expected to put an end to Zuma's nearly nine years in office.

Of course, the events of interest were those that related to his duties as president of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and not as deputy leader of the Republic.

The ANC called the urgent NEC meeting following Ramaphosa's direct talks with Zuma.

As NPR's Bill Chappell reported a year ago, Zuma has already survived numerous votes of confidence in South Africa's parliament. "Anybody who wants to take this matter further, so be it".

An ANC official in the Western Cape province said the schedule changes related to the party's push to force Zuma to stand down.

"We know you want this matter to be finalised", he said to rapturous cheering, vowing to tackle corruption that has tarnished Zuma's government. This is despite speculation that SONA would be postponed to allow President Zuma to resign the presidency.

According to Dr Groenewald, the drawn-out negotiations over whether or not President Zuma must step down as president of the country is now damaging the economy more than removing Zuma as such.

Ramaphosa, a 65-year-old lawyer and one of the richest black South Africans, has pledged to revive the flagging economy and clamp down on the corruption that has become synonymous with the Zuma era.

Zuma, has been facing several corruption charges over the course of his presidency.

His comments prompted some in the crowd to chant "Zuma must go!"

Meanwhile‚ the Congress of the People says the country has suffered immeasurable harm under Zuma's presidency and that his removal could not come sooner. "He can't tell us what to do", he said.

On Friday, Madiba-Zuma posted a photo of herself and the president on Instagram, saying, in isiZulu, "It's going get rough, don't fight with someone who is not fighting you".

"Even if the ANC meeting on Monday decides Zuma needs to step down, he can still refuse because they have no legal authority", Mcebisi Ndletyana, politics professor at the University of Johannesburg, told AFP. The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing. "The NEC was called to take a decision to remove Zuma because Ramaphosa likely could not make any more progress on the talks", Kotze said, referring to the NEC meeting scheduled for today.

If the motion were held and a majority of legislators voted against Zuma, the entire Cabinet would also have to resign, dashing Ramaphosa's hopes of a carefully managed transition.

As the commemoration to mark the 28th anniversary of the release from prison of former president Nelson Mandela continued on Sunday, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has announced that it will issue a set of commemorative bank notes to honour the former statesman's centenary.
