Trump explains refusal to declassify Dems' memo

Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer wrote a letter to President Trump on Sunday saying that if the president does not release the Democrats'memo it "will confirm the American people's worst fears that the release of Chairman Nunes' memo was only meant to undermine Special Counsel Bob Mueller's investigation".
Democrats say the GOP memo contradicts its own premise that the Russian Federation investigation began with Page and the dossier.
Regardless of the agencies' recommendations, the White House's handling of the Democratic memo will be closely scrutinized, and if he opposes its release, the impact of his political views on the process will undoubtedly be called into question.
The Democratic memo is expected to directly undercut allegations of Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department abuses leveled in a controversial Republican memo Trump cleared for release last week.
Specifically, they point to a British court filing in which Steele says he briefed several news outlets in September 2016 on a collection of memos he wrote detailing allegations, including some salacious claims, of ties between Russia, Trump and Trump associates.
Editor's note: U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., was one of the key authors of the House Intelligence Committee's now-declassified GOP memo about the application under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to surveil ex-Trump official Carter Page. A controversial Republican intelligence memo released last week highlighted that Page had been targeted.
The White House said the Justice Department had identified portions of the memo that "would create especially significant concerns for the national security and law enforcement interests" of the country.
"The President has seen the memo", White House press secretary Sarah Sanderstold reporters at the briefing Tuesday. "He has it. It's pretty lengthy", Kelly said.
House Intelligence is one of three congressional committees investigating Russian Federation and the 2016 US election, after USA intelligence agencies found that Russian Federation attempted to influence the campaign on Trump's behalf.
Trump tweeted in response to the release of the Nunes memo, saying it is proof that the investigative process has been politicized. The memos have become known as the Trump-Russia "dossier" after they were published by Buzzfeed past year. In their zeal to keep the public ignorant of what went on at every turn, laying blame where there was none, they have found themselves in a quagmire of deceit and corruption. "So they can't take a blanket objection to redactions. If it's simply a ploy to force us into a circumstance where it looks like we're trying to override and do something, we'll have to cross that bridge". And the House Intelligence Committee voted unanimously Monday to do just that. But the White House could request that information from the Democrats' memo be redacted.
Redacting parts of the Democratic rebuttal, of course, would play right into Schiff's hands-an outcome Rep. Trey Gowdy suspects Schiff is setting up on goal.
The GOP senators allege that the additional memo dated October 19, 2016 was at least partially based on information from a "foreign sub-source who 'is in touch with [redacted], a contact of [redacted], a friend of the Clintons, who passed it to [redacted]". "They're setting this up to make the argument there's political redactions". Perhaps members of both houses should demand a "redo".
