Political Battle Intensifies, Leading To Government Shutdown
Congress is risking another federal government shutdown as HouseRepublicans on Tuesday approved a temporary bill loaded with extra military spending that will nearly certainly face a filibuster from Democrats - and some Republicans - in the Senate.
USA federal government is running on a short-term spendingbill which expires on February 8.
But President Trump inserted a major new demand into the sensitive talks on Tuesday, calling for another shutdown if lawmakers don't pass new border security measures as part of an immigrationdeal.
With each passing hour, that result was looking less and less likely.
The agreement was negotiated by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and marks a major breakthrough that will make it easier to manage the federal government through September 30, 2019.
Both Democrats and Republicans favor lifting the caps.
"House Republicans continue marching down a very partisan road", Schumer said, arguing that the Housebill "will raise defensespending but leave everything else behind". The Democrats were supposed to head to a retreat in Maryland but made a decision to cancel in order to work out a deal.
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it", Huizenga said.
Democratic leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY called the Senateagreement "a genuine breakthrough". A final vote would follow.
The Senate is now expected to rewrite that measure, pass it and send it back for House approval before Thursday's funding deadline - provided there are no efforts to slow the process in the Senate. Numerous so-called "dreamers" will lose protection from deportation - granted by the Obama administration in 2014 and rescinded by Trump last fall - in the coming weeks.
But the deal's fate in the House is far from certain.
Conservative political groups also lashed out at the fiscal impact of the deal.
"I can not overstate the negative impact to our troops and families' morale from all this budget uncertainty", said Defense Secretary James Mattis at the White House. Trump said speaking to law enforcement panel.
"Sometimes I think the speaker thinks he's speaker of the White House not the speaker of the House of Representatives", she sniped.
The agreement also provides funds for disaster relief, infrastructure and programs addressing opioid abuse, the Senate leaders said. However, it does not include funding for border security or deal with protecting young illegal migrants brought to the United States as children.
Such protections are about to expire in early March, a result of President Trump ending the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.
What about immigration? For now, negotiations on the issue are moving along on a separate track.
"I know that there is a real commitment to solving the DACA challenge in both political parties".
"I am just telling people why I am voting the way I am voting", Pelosi said at a news conference Thursday morning.

The new observation of the Roadster, obtained by a robotically controlled telescope, showed the car moving across the night sky. SpaceX has since told me that these reports are "categorically false". "We're not totally buying that", Rusch said.
