Beware, flu season is on and as bad as 2009 swine flu

CDC — Flu season to get worse with weeks of suffering ahead

Guelph area child dies from flu, 2nd child's death possibly flu-related

So far this year, 63 children have died.

"The state continues to see a high number of flu cases and flu-related deaths this season", Meg Mirivel, public information officer for the Health Department, wrote in a news release.

That's tied to the highest level seen in the United States during the swine flu nine years ago. Emergency department data from last week show that nearly 20% of visits statewide are due to influenza-like illness in children less than 4 years old. CDC also recommends that people who are very sick or people who are at high risk of serious influenza complications be treated early with flu antiviral drugs. Indiana's weekly influenza report for the period ending February 3 shows 128 of the state's flu deaths have occurred among people age 65 or older.

"We extend our condolences to this family and all families in SC who have suffered losses during this flu season", said Dr. Lilian Peake, DHEC's Director of Public Health. A recent CDC study showed vaccination prevents deaths by half (51%) among children with underlying high-risk medical conditions and almost two-thirds (65%) among healthy children.

Absences for flu-like symptoms accounted for only 0.6 and 0.9 percent of absences in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The flu typically comes on quickly with fever, body aches, cough and runny nose and Keyona is now recovering. It's hard to compare the severity of influenza across seasons for more than a handful of years because of changes in how the virus is handled in the U.S. The CDC started recommending universal vaccination to stop the spread of the virus in 2010, after previously targeting only those in high-risk groups who were most likely to die from an infection. She said she hadn't been this sick from the flu since the 1960s, when she was a young mother who couldn't get out of bed to go to the crib of her crying baby.

In Connecticut, 1,360 people have been hospitalized with influenza as of last week.

Some doctors say this is the worst flu season they've seen in decades.

The winter flu season started early and was widespread in many states by December, hitting what seemed to be peak levels last month, but then continued to surge. "We may be on track to break some recent records". The whole family had been vaccinated for seasonal influenza in September.

"Even with the effectiveness down some this season, it should still not be passed over", Farr said.

The only possible good news, Schuchat said, was that the nation is seeing rising cases of influenza B. While influenza A strains still accounted for 73.3% of all samples tested, influenza B accounted for 26.7%, up from 19.8% in last week's report.

"We're seeing a big rise in urgent care visits for influenza or influenza-like illnesses", she said.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women and people whose immune systems are compromised are especially susceptible to the flu.

It's one scary flu season.
