Snow blankets Chicago as winter storm sweeps US Midwest

There is the potential for light snow starting in the metro in the mid-afternoon. Wind chill values could be as low as -5 degrees. The warning is in effect for Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Boone, De Kalb, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, Lee, McHenry, Ogle and Winnebago counties in IL and Lake and Porter counties in IN and Kenosha County in Wisconsin until 9 p.m. Friday.

The Weather Network says there will be a significant impact on travel across Highway 97 from Prince George to Williams Lake where up to 45 centimetres of snow is possible.

Side streets in Chicago remained snow-covered, as the city's full fleet of 300 plows tackled the main thoroughfares through the morning, officials said.

We're still on track for more snow Saturday too.

"Snowfall amounts look to be in the 4-7" range in the Lansing area with lesser amounts north in Clinton, Ionia and Shiawassee Counties.

The forecast called for a tapering off of the initial storm Saturday morning, with another winter storm poised to arrive Saturday night bringing 3 to 5 more inches of snow before tapering off Sunday morning.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon, nine hours earlier than when it was first issued on Thursday. For the snow season (since July 1), Madison has received 20.6 inches, 12.8 inches below normal.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with a 70 percent chance for more snow likely.

This storm will snarl the morning commute on Friday. As the arctic air moves south, temperatures will drop significantly, and any snow or ice that has melted will re-freeze, then snow will fall on top of that.

Miles City could get up to over 9 inches of snow and Livingston could get over 10. Snow is expected to spread across much of northern Iowa Thursday afternoon and continue to spread southward into central Iowa Thursday night. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of about 29 degrees and a low of 13 degrees. The Quincy High School Hall of Fame induction was delayed from Friday night to next Friday, February 16th.
