(3rd LD) Pence avoids encountering NK nominal head of state

PyeongChang Olympics' opening ceremony promises pageantry and politics

During a pre-Olympics Opening ceremonies reception in Pyeongchang later that day, Pence "did not come across" the North Korean delegation, according to a spokesman for the Vice President. Athletes from North and South paraded together during the ceremony in the same white parkas, marching under a single "unification flag" depicting an undivided peninsula to the tune of their shared traditional folk song "Arirang" instead of their respective anthems.

"We have no intention to meet the USA side during our visit to South Korea", Jo said in a terse statement reported by state-run news agency KCNA.

The grand event which will run through February 25 will see 2,920 athletes competing for 92 nations with a record 102 gold medals at stake.

The joint Korean women's hockey team was routed by Switzerland 8-0 in its historic first game at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Saturday, a disastrous performance before a packed house that included a few dignitaries.

The Pyeongchang Olympics are the second ever to be held on the Korean Peninsula, and its first Winter Games.

Kim Eui-kyeom, South Korean president's spokesman, said at a news conference in Seoul on Saturday that the North Korean delegation delievered the invitation letter at a landmark high-level meeting at the presidential palace in Seoul.

Pence said he and Moon spoke as "friends" and are completely aligned on the need to increase diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea.

But North Korea's bad record on human rights and the growing threat from its nuclear weapons program appeared out of mind. It was the only documentation on the table on the North Korean side.

"The grievances that the world has about North Korea are very legitimate".

Coach Sarah Murray played three North Korean forwards as required in the deal creating the team; she had to scratch three of her South Korean players for the game.

"She's a pretty important person in the regime", said Michael Madden, an analyst at the U.S. -Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. South Korea wants a northern neighbor without nukes; North Korea vows to keep its weapons until the United States discards its "hostile" policies against the country.

The countries are still technically at war since a 1953 armistice, though they have resumed talks after a year-long standoff between North Korea and the United States in which an exchange of threats between the heads of state elevated tensions and prompted the North's continued missile and nuclear tests.

They were also not able to get close to the VIP area, where US Vice-President Mike Pence and the real Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong were in attendance.

As they shook hands, the North and South Koreans spoke briefly.

South Korea allowed the North to use a 9,700-ton ferry to transport more than 100 artists to perform at the Olympics, treating it as an exemption to maritime sanctions it imposed on its rival, and is now considering whether to accept the North's request to supply fuel for the ship. Moon also greeted Fred Warmbier, who was seated behind him, Alemany reports.

The smiles and handshakes were friendlier than some of the North's past history with the complex - in 1968 Pyongyang sent commandos to attack it to try to assassinate the South's then leader.
