Third child in New York City dies of flu-related illness

CDC — Flu season to get worse with weeks of suffering ahead

Guelph area child dies from flu, 2nd child's death possibly flu-related

The child is the only Wyoming pediatric death that's known, a health official said, though there's more reporting requirements for those fatalities.

Officials say it's possible that we could see several more weeks of increased fu activity before the epidemic finally starts to wane. It can be hard to track the number of deaths overall because frequently the complication, like sepsis or pneumonia, is listed on the death certificate rather than the flu.

"Unfortunately, more deaths are likely to happen", Schuchat said. "Influenza is a serious respiratory infection and the flu season is not over".

Of the influenza A strains tested last week, 13.5% were subtyped as A (H1N1) pmd09, 78.3% were H3N2, and 8.2% were not subtyped.

She's not the only health provider seeing the increase.

"It's not quite doubled, but it's approaching that", he said.

"We extend our condolences to this family and all families in SC who have suffered lost during this flu season", Dr. Lilian Peake, DHEC's Director of Public Health, said.

California, Arizona, Utah Oregon and Idaho are also experiencing a decline. New Jersey and CT each confirmed one pediatric flu death this season.

"This year is not a pandemic, but the high ILI is a sign of the severity of this year's flu season", said Anne Schuchat, MD, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Last year, there were 15 flu-related deaths during the influenza season in Wyoming, which stretches from October to May.

"The tragic death of a child due to the flu is a reminder of the devastating effects this illness can have on people of all ages", said Julien A. Martinez of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. At this point, level of flu-like activity is as high as it was at the peak in 2009.

"Just because it's going down right now, doesn't mean it can't go back up again".

"It may not prevent you from getting the flu", DeMaria said, "but it could prevent you from having to be hospitalized".

Health officials say residents should get vaccinated. "If anyone of them have colds or flu type symptoms, we ask them to stay home", said Weir.

Bennett said the Cass County Health Department still has some of this season's flu vaccine left and those 6 months to 18 years who have Medicaid or health insurance that does not cover vaccines can receive a free shot after scheduling an appointment. Influenza B strains and influenza A H1N1 are still increasing, though. "Her school nurse sent her home with a 102-fever", said Keyona's mom.
