This year's flu is breaking records for hospitalizations and is on track to infect about 34 million Americans this season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 10 more pediatric flu deaths were reported last week, bringing the total to 63 children who have died from the flu so far this season.

Another 2,349 New Yorkers with the flu were hospitalized, the highest weekly number since the state began keeping records in 2004.

A particular strain of the flu is injected into fertilized eggs, incubated and harvested.

Middle-aged people are being stricken at almost twice the rate seen in 2014-15, although health officials aren't sure why.

It's a flu season for the ages.

However, the vaccine does help those who get the shot build stronger immunity against the B strain, Schuchat said, citing the Canadian research.

In previous severe flu seasons - not counting pandemics caused by newly mutated viruses - the CDC estimates that up to 56,000 people have died in a single year.

The number of laboratory confirmed cases of flu in the state increased in a week to more than the year-to-date number of such cases at this point last season. OR and Hawaii are the two exceptions.

This year's flu is also of a nastier caliber and has put more people in the hospital than usual.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today that pediatric deaths from the flu, as of February 3, now stands at 63, with one of them in the New England region.

The release urges those experiencing flu-like symptoms to contact their doctor or visit an urgent care facility to keep emergency rooms available for those who are critically ill.

'What may be mild symptoms to you can be deadly for someone else, ' Dr Schuchat said. That ties the highest level seen in the US during swine flu in 2009.

CDC data show 48 of the 50 states reporting high influenza-like illness.

"In 2014-15, that number was 35.1 per 1,000".

"We have a lot to learn still about influenza", she said. Some doctors call this the worst flu season in decades. However, preliminary studies out of Australia and Canada have found the shot was only 10 to 20 percent effective in those countries against the H3N2 strain that's causing the most suffering this winter. "We still have several weeks left to go".

You can still get a flu vaccine at Tulsa Heath Departments including the Collinsville Community Health Center, 1201 W. Center.

"It's the flu is nearly over and then there is sepsis or pneumonia", said John Mahan, Director of Nursing, Savannah Square.

A viruses, often linked to more serious flu illness, continue to dominate. It's unknown if those victims had gotten a flu shot or not.

"These egg-adaptations during vaccine production can lead to decreased match between the circulating viruses and the viruses in the vaccine". Flu season may not end until May. "But if we stay vigilant and take steps to fight flu, we can reduce the risk of getting - and transmitting - it".

Don't spread the misery. People should avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth, particularly if their hands aren't clean. It's even possible for a person to be infected with both types of the virus at once.
