Syriasaid Wednesday it has responded to "a new Israeliaggression" after aircraft targeted a military outpost near Damascus, claiming its air defense system destroyed most of the missiles.
Israel's army said it had launched a "large-scale attack" inside Syria on Saturday after one of its jets was downed under Syrian antiaircraft fire, in a series of cross-border incidents that threatened to destabilize the volatile region between the two countries.
"Massive Syrian Anti-Air fire, one F16 crashed in Israel, pilots safe", IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus said on Twitter.
The wreckage was found shortly after Israel said a warfighter crashed in northern Israel during a raid on military targets inside Syria.
Iran and allied forces have fought alongside government troops against the U.S. backed rebels and Jihadists in the seven-year war. Manelis said that the targets included the trailer from which the Iranians launched the drone. Iran has backed President Bashar al-Assad through Syria's seven-year civil war, sending thousands of fighters to help defeat the armed and civilian opposition to Assad's rule.
However, the Command of Syria's Allies dismissed such claims, stressing that the drone which the Zionist regime was talking about was operating over the Syrian airspace.
"The statement by the Israeli enemy that it was targeted by a drone which entered the airspace of occupied Palestine, is nothing but lies and allegations", the statement said.
This was an defensive effort triggered by an "Iranian act of aggression", and "we are willing, prepared and capable to extract a heavy price from anyone that attacks us", he said.
In a major escalation of tension in the region, the jet fighter was shot down and crashed in northern Israel, according to media reports. Iran rejected the Israeli version of events as "ridiculous".
Earlier in the week Israel was reported to have struck an Iranian base west of the capital of Damascus.
Netanyahu has been cautioning against any attempt by Iran to deepen its military foothold in Syria or construct missile factories in neighbouring Lebanon.
Israel's chief military spokesman said Israel held Iran directly responsible for the incident. It infiltrated Israel's airspace above the southern Golan Heights.
