The continuing resolution (CR), which passed the House 245-182, would fund the Defense Department for the rest of fiscal 2018 and keep the rest of the government's lights on until March 23.
While Schumer said the spending plan is good for New Yorkers, his fellow Democrat, Maloney, said, "This budget-busting deal is bad for my neighbors in the Hudson Valley".
"We have reached the budget deal that neither side loves but both sides can be proud of", he said.
The deal would involve a defense spending boost that has been long demanded by President Trump alongside an enhanced domestic programs promoted by Democrats. That puts pressure on Republicans, who could still pass a bill in the House even if almost all Democrats voted against it.
On Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan gave his full support to the bill to try to rally others in chamber to also vote yes - saying the military is at risk without the money, while acknowledging the deal includes partisan compromises and isn't ideal.
The bill came as the result of a 2011 standoff over the U.S. debt ceiling, when Republicans in Congress demanded spending cuts in exchange for giving the Obama administration the needed legal headroom to pay the federal government's obligations to its bondholders.
The deal will raise budget caps and prevent the mandatory spending cuts under sequestration from taking effect.
"After months of legislative logjams, this budget deal is a genuine breakthrough", Schumer said on the Senate floor. "It also ensures funding for our other critical priorities, including rebuilding America's crumbling infrastructure, tackling the opioids epidemic and taking care of our great veterans", Sanders said. Republicans control Congress's upper chamber with 51 members and need nine Democrats to back any government spending bill.
But several Republicans said they weren't optimistic the extra defence spending could get through the Senate.
Last year, Trump ended the program known as DACA that provided people in the country illegally who were brought to the United States as children temporary protections from deportation. McConnell has said he will allow the Senate to debate an immigration bill on its own after Friday if the government remains open. The bill doesn't contain a hurricane disaster relief package that has already passed the House and is stalled in the Senate.
