SpaceX Successfully Launches Largest Rocket Yet

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy made history by becoming the world's most powerful rocket in operation as it blasted off from Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre carrying a red sports convertible and playing David Bowie's Space Oddity. In a typically Musk-ian touch of whimsy, the Falcon's upper stage and test payload is Musk's own old $100,000 cherry red Tesla Roadster sports auto, and a dummy in its driver's seat called Starman rocking to David Bowie's Life on Mars.

While the initial launch sequence was almost flawless, there were some significant problems that may lead customers to question the reliability of the Falcon vehicle.

Elon Musk is calling for a new "space race" after successfully launching a sports auto into orbit - but billionaires with money to burn on rockets have some calling for caution before a wild rush to the stars. "HUGE congrats to the @SpaceX team on your maiden flight!"

Now, Elon Musk's private spaceflight company has apparently joined the ranks of the hoaxers and liars, the flat-Earthers say. "It can do anything you want". It could lift 140 metric tons (310,000 lb) into low earth orbit and deliver 48.6 tons (107,100 lb) to the moon.

The billion years might be an exaggeration if the vehicle happens to hit something, but the Mars orbit turned out to be an underestimate.

One of Musk's key takeaways from the Falcon Heavy's successful flight?

In the meantime, with the Heavy demo out of the way, Musk said SpaceX is putting its commercial crew effort for NASA front and center.

Currently, United Launch Alliance, a Boeing (BA)-Lockheed Martin (LMT) joint venture, has the only heavy-payload, Defense Department-certified rocket.

"I think it looks so ridiculous and impossible".

"I kind of like the absurdity of it", he said at a press conference Tuesday.

Elon Musk has since said he hopes to create a "new space race". The fuel takes being reusable in this SpaceX program is very important but it means being able to put a fuel depo in space, say on the moon. But the payload has overshot that route and is now headed even deeper into space. "It will be the most powerful rocket ever built, enabling diverse exploration, science and security missions". That's more than double the Falcon Heavy's thrust.

Official reactions to the launch of the century are likely to follow soon. Also, six of the recovered Falcon 9 boosters have been reused in subsequent missions, thus reducing the costs of each mission.

"When you're talking about highly classified payloads or special missions, you really want to be sure you've got capacity", Ellen Tauscher, former US undersecretary of state for arms control and global security, who now serves on SpaceX's board of advisors, said Tuesday.
