Elon Musk sends Tesla Roadster into space
Two of the boosters land at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station after the launch of SpaceXFalcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center.
The rocket would be partially reusable and capable of flight directly from Earth to Mars.
A four-hour livestream chronicled the adventures of the mannequin, known as "Starman", providing stunning images as it started on an elliptic orbit toward Mars - though it has exceeded the Mars orbit and is expected to head toward the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Later in the evening of February 3, a final burn blasted the Tesla and its "driver" on a path toward Mars and the asteroid belt. After a successful takeoff and some breathtaking views from Tesla's livestream, there was one more propulsion phase of the plan to send the vehicle, playing David Bowie's "Space Oddity", to its destination. "Typically with a new rocket, they launch a block of concrete and that's so boring".
Loaded with Mr Musk's red Tesla and a mannequin in a spacesuit, the monster rocket's historic test voyage captured the world's imagination. "Any space player will not be a real power if it doesn't have some competitive private space firms, which play an irreplaceable role in stimulating innovating and controlling costs", the businessman said. During the coast interval, SpaceX released live video via the Internet of the Tesla circling the Earth.
"I think it's going to encourage other companies and countries to say, 'Hey, if SpaceX, a commercial company, can do this, and nobody paid for the Falcon Heavy- it was paid for with internal funds -then they could do it too, '" Musk said. "You can tell it's real because it looks so fake, honestly", Mr Musk said after the launch. "It's still tripping me out".
One commented: "It might even have just been another satellite in orbit".
SpaceX invested its own internal funds to develop Falcon Heavy.
He also noted that Chinese rocket designers could benefit from SpaceX's experience in corporate and project management.
A rocket operated by the aerospace company SpaceX exploded on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral where it was being test-fired ahead of a launch.
Mars is driving all of Musk's space efforts.
"Sending rockets into space is simply part of being what God created humans to be", said Bill Nettles, chairman of the physics department at Union University, "creative problem solvers, investigators of beauty and mystery".
The BFR (Big F***ing Rocket) will complete all missions and is smaller than the ones Musk announced in 2016.
The spacecraft is created to be carried into the upper atmosphere by a specialised plane (rather than a rocket) and dropped at an altitude of about 50,000ft (15,000m), before boosting itself to suborbital space using its own rocket motor.
On the eve of the flight, Musk said the company had done all it could to maximize success. This took out two thrusters and showered the deck with shrapnel when the core hit the Atlantic Ocean at approximately 482 kph (300 mph), Musk told reporters. Two of the three first-stage boosters flew back for side-by-side landings; the third was lost at sea.
The National Space Society congratulated all at SpaceX who work every day to make humankind a multi-planetary species by creating a spacefaring civilization. "This is a revolution", Robert Zubrin said in a statement.
Tesla sports car now flying toward asteroid belt beyond Mars
Instead, the vehicle will whiz past the Red Planet by a much larger margin than expected and zoom off out into the asteroid belt. The Falcon Heavy launched from the same NASA pad that was the base for the Apollo-era Moon missions of the 1960s and 1970s.

Rugby: Watson and Simmonds star as England down Italy
