"He's a superhero; he's not just a king". There's no significant tease for a sequel or any other Marvelfilm here. Finally, we have a Marvel villain that is able to raise the stakes and create a peril that leaves you wondering how our hero will come through.
Black superheroes have reached the screen before, but seeing the collective weight of Marvel/Disney thrown behind a blockbuster like "Black Panther" still feels like a cultural watershed, one that the movie exuberantly embraces.
The movie's megawatt casting, with stars like Chadwick Boseman, Lupita N'yongo, Angela Bassett and Michael B. Jordan, and jaw-dropping special effects are sure to deliver an unforgettable experience for superhero fans. In the context of the place United States finds itself today, and where it has come from, Boseman knows he can't wise-crack his way through the film in the fashion of, for example, Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark, and the responsibility to be at all times honest weighs on him.
"Black Panther" opens February 16 in the U.S. It's rated PG-13. Tested by powerful outside forces and a risky former enemy, T'Challa must fight for the fate of his beloved country and the entire world. Vibranium makes up the suit that T'Challa dons as Black Panther, and its power is much guarded. Especially when it comes to what Wakanda represents, and how it can and should help others in Africa and the world. The action scenes felt real, and the stunt actors move gingerly amongst each other so well that during their choreography you can see punches and kicks with flawless precision. Each and every part of Wakanda looks like some genius illustration from high fantasy, only believably real looking. The tentpole is the first MCU property to be led by a black superhero and to feature a predominately blackcast. "I was coming off the red carpet for Get On Up and my agent was like, 'You've gotta get on the phone.' And the insane thing is I didn't even have worldwide calling on my phone until that morning".
That idea, that concept, I was very interested in and drawn towards. She's not timid and bookish, or brash and arrogant, but jubilant and empowered by her genius. Killmonger is charming, brutal, intense, and intelligent in all of the ways that you want a bad guy to match an awesome hero like T'Challa. Keep an eye out for Wright; she's sure to be a breakout. Wakanda is a force to be feared and envied rather than a nation brought low by colonisation, combining the vivacious aesthetic of tribal customs and costumes with the silver sheen of its world-beating technology (a blend beautifully realised by Hannah Beachler's extraordinary production design). T'Challa's mystical visit to his ancestors is gloriously rendered on a twilight plain beneath a pink-hued sky and the glowing eyes of panthers in a tree.
Chadwick Boseman isn't anxious about being typecast as a superhero from now on. "In the comic book, T'Challa is a scientist and a king, but my sister is the whiz kid".
Critical and celebrity reactions to Black Panther after Monday's premiere were about as good as could be expected, with reviewers hailing the movie as "iconic" and "astonishing". T'Challa has to confront the reality of his father's deeds beyond the legacy.
