American Heart Association Wants Women To “Go Red” On Friday

Go Red for Women Day: Heart disease awareness

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases - which include stroke - claim the life of a woman about every 80 seconds.

Yet women are less likely than men to believe they're at risk, and their heart disease symptoms are more likely to go misdiagnosed, resulting in the disease being discovered much later, the heart association says.

"I started the Go Red for Women Luncheon".

"My mom is truly an inspiration to me and my family", said Christensen.

Sara Parcell, of Victor, was diagnosed with heart disease in 2014. And zero, if she hadn't had the surgery at all.

"I had a hole in the upper chamber of the heart and it was two times larger than it was supposed to be", Davis said.

He's been by her side the whole way.

High Cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. But the message was a little bit more serious and essential in helping to prevent unnecessary heart disease.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in November released new hypertension guidelines.

Butt says while the system needs to do a better job, because many women are in caregiver roles, they also tend to put themselves last.

"[The recipes are] very simple and healthy, and that's what we want to keep people living longer", said Pam Johnson, the manager and a chef at Elijah's Promise. People are encouraged to reduce their risk of heart disease by eating a heart-healthy diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, not smoking or using tobacco products, maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough sleep, managing stress and visiting their health care providers for regular screenings.

Survivor Annie Dragoo said that can be the most hard part. "We all know you are what you eat, but it's also important that you recognize that you are what you think".

"If we can just educate and promote awareness that could maybe take us out of that number one spot", Cucurullo said.
