Kenya: Media blackout ahead of Odinga's banned inauguration

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga of the National Super Alliance raises his fist before taking a symbolic presidential oath of office in Nairobi Kenya

The Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga of National Super Alliance has been sworn in as the "people's president".

Claiming the poll would not be fair, Odinga boycotted the second vote and Kenyatta won with 98 percent.

The Interior Ministry wasted no time issuing a statement after the ceremony declaring the NRM an "organized criminal group" under Kenya's Prevention of Organized Crimes Act.

The police have vowed to block opposition supporters from reaching the event.

There are fears that the government may have revoked the licenses of the popular TV stations to punish them for going against its directive.

The Kenya government shut down four popular TV channels and several radio stations ahead of the planned swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the "People's President" in the capital Nairobi.

Kenya's Supreme Court declared Kenyatta victor of the official October 25 election, which came weeks after the original August 8 vote that was annulled by Kenya's high court.

By 6am GMT, about 400 people were gathered in Uhuru Park, near Nairobi's main business district.

The ODM boss and veteran Opposition leader deems Uhuru's presidency illegitimate.

During a speech lasting less than five minutes, Odinga declined to give details of his plans and said they would be disclosed in "due course".

The ceremony was attended by some of his most loyal supporters, who participated despite threats from the government that it would be considered treason if they were to do so.

Three Kenyan television and radio stations remained off the air on Wednesday and said they had not heard from authorities, a day after they were shut down while airing coverage of an opposition gathering in Nairobi.

NASA is considered the victor of the presidential elections held last August, which were annulled by the Supreme Court.

The result of the August general election was annulled following allegations of irregularities. The electoral commission has refuted those claims.

"Kenya is on a very slippery trajectory in regard to human rights, and president Kenyatta urgently needs to reverse this trend", Namwaya said.

A re-run of the election was held on October 26. At least 92 people were killed past year as election turmoil gripped the country.

During the meeting at Harambee House, the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) also chose to withdraw Mr Odinga's official police bodyguards. "We need change and that change must come today", she said.

In some cases, journalists and bloggers critical of the government and senior officials have been physically attacked or killed, by people who have been identified.
