In December, the U.S. tech company also announced a $50 (£37) reduction in the price of iPhone battery replacements, which it cut down from $79 (£56) to $29 (£20).

Many commentators believe that Apple's $999 price tag for the device is largely responsible for the phone's failure to interest large numbers of consumers. The investigation is in early stages.

Apple was previously investigated by the US Department of Justice in 2012 over the price of digital book downloads.

The iPhone X only went on sale in November, so most of Apple's sales would've been on conventional models - the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8 families.

In simple words, users with the new iPhone X don't have the option of using the Face ID in Ask to Buy feature. Apple has offered to replace any affected batteries for $29, down from the company's previous $79 price.

A report from Bloomberg claims that the United States government has requested information from Apple and is looking into public statements made by the company pertaining to the situation. Aging lithium batteries deliver power unevenly, could lead iPhones shutting down unexpectedly to protect the delicate circuits inside, it said.

A spokesperson for Apple also emphasised the company's position that it would never do anything to intentionally cut the lifespan of a product short to drive sales of new devices.

Interestingly, the wake-up-faster thing is part of Apple's initiative to improve the overall quality of the software and I couldn't agree more with it. Thus, iOS 12, which can be expected to be announced at and arrive by about September, is said to be a feature-light update. As such, we believe Apple is unlikely to have enough spare resources to develop a new iPhone model for launch in 2Q18.

Tim Cook, CEO at Apple apologised to the company's customers who thought Apple slowed down the phones for money.

Apple plans to release an iPhone software update in the next few months with new features that let users monitor the health of their batteries and protect against slowdowns, the report noted. Other than this, US-based telecom operator Verizon has also reported a decline in new postpaid registrations and users are keeping their phones for longer.

The company's shares were down slightly in Tuesday trading- less than one percent - closing at $166.97 per share.
