Ryom and Kim, two of 22 North Korean athletes added to the PyeongChang Olympics by the International Olympic Committee, finished third Friday in a tune-up for the Winter Games at the Four Continents Championships in Taipei. In recent talks, the North promised to play traditional Korean folk, as well as classical music according to a January 15 New York Times article.

If North Korea can successfully rouse nationalist sentiment in the South as part of its propaganda show, then Kim will have hijacked more than just the Olympics. A total of 22 North Korean athletes will compete in 5 disciplines, making this the largest North Korean delegation in Winter Olympic history.

Dressed in white-and-red winter parkas emblazoned with the North Korean flag, the ice hockey players arrived on Thursday to South Korea's athletes' village in Jincheon, 56 miles south of Seoul.

While North Korea participating at Pyeongchang 2018 has been hailed as a way to ease political tension between the two countries, their appearance in South Korea has not been universally popular.

"[Kim Jong-un] is still a risky leader and this agreement is somewhat making it seem like he is not, yet he still has missile and military power that we should not be taking lightly, even in a time of reunion", Arce stated.

Mattis was to discuss the security situation on the divided peninsula and other alliance issues Friday during a meeting in Hawaii with his South Korean counterpart Song Young-Moo. "Of course the agreement between the North and South will be beneficial to the two countries in that it will make the bond stronger between the governments".

But the North was also preparing a massive military parade in Pyongyang on February 8, a day before the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony, Cho said.

-South Korea joint military exercises held annually on the condition that North Korea agrees to give up its nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that Pyongyang claims can reach the US mainland, a USA lawmaker said. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono called on the world community to question North Korea's motivations.

And that is why Kim's proposal is aimed at emphasizing something that all Koreans actually do have in common: the feeling of being pushed around by bigger countries in the worldwide community. Temperatures at Whistler, the ski resort town where many events were held, averaged 10 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

The United States and South Korea maintain that the annual exercises, which have been carried out regularly for almost 40 years, are strictly defensive and non-provocative.

North Korea's intentions with this unprecedented action of unity are not clear.

According to the Treasury's report, both firms made a huge profit in the tens-of-millions of dollars by trading with North Korea.

What do you think of unifying North and South Korea? It is unclear why suddenly Kim has chose to cooperate with South Korea and the rest of the world.

"There are members of Congress who have signed onto my letter who are open to [the reduction in joint military exercises], but only under the condition that North Korea really commit to denuclearization and to not developing intercontinental ballistic missiles that can hit the United States".
