Point in time count critical to homeless preparedness

Annual Count Of Homeless Takes Place Countywide

Officials say they hope as many people as possible attend, so they can get a better count of how many homeless live in our area.

During the 2017 point-in-time count, volunteers found 506 people were homeless.

But after explaining to the couple what they're doing, they participated in the survey.

For the second year, their count will include students from Purdue University Northwest and Ivy Tech, Liggins said.

"They judge what they see, but when you talk to them, it's a whole other story".

In addition to counting, volunteers gave out goodie bags and offered the homeless rides to shelters. "It will be cold and damp and they will stay with friends or in the shelters", she said. According to the census two-years ago there were 200 to 300 homeless people unsheltered and about 900 homeless people were sheltered.

The many agencies addressing the issue in Kentucky's Balance of State work collaboratively to not only provide shelter, but to remove barriers for those experiencing homelessness as well.

The shelter now provides short-term housing and transitional services for 13 men.

Volunteers were out Wednesday night trying to find and help homeless individuals across Central New York.

On Thursday, a camp fire burned in the distance and the smell of smoke filled the air as a small group of volunteers led by Theresa Biggs, housing navigator for the Chattanooga Housing Authority, made their way toward the entrance. Lextran will offer the homeless free rides to shelters during that period.

Inside the Valparaiso Public Library, Charles Snyder and Torrey Dixson, a case manager, set up a table with information about the many services available through Housing Opportunities and other partners.

Thursday's Point in Time count happened the day after the city of Vancouver closed on a deal to purchase the former state Fish and Wildlife building for use as a day center for the homeless.

"It allows us to compare county to county and region to region to figure out how as a region ( dubbed COC for "continuum of care") we should send out resources", Mansfield said. "So we're collecting this information, not only for a federal mandate but also so we can accumulate that information so we know about the services that are necessary and needed here within our community". "The numbers decreased slightly in the last three years". "We definitely could not do it alone because it is a huge community effort".
