He said that Trump and Carson, the lone African-American member of the Cabinet, were talking about the fallout from Thursday's vulgar remarks when Trump turned to him and said, "I am not the person that the media is making me out to be".

The controversy, stemming from discussions about whether to include immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti and African countries in an immigration bill, appears to have dimmed chances of reaching a deal on immigration in the coming weeks.

"And if they say we don't have that, say, 'Well, look again, '" she added.

Just before Christmas, a New York Times report emerged alleging that Trump had said people from Haiti "all have AIDS", that Nigerians all live in huts and that Afghanistan is full of terrorists. The president asked why the US would want all those people from Haiti.

Trump preceded that message with a tweet that simply said: "America First!" "But, if you're saying somebody's from a s--hole country, to me it doesn't make sense". There are nearly 800,000 young DACA beneficiaries who will face imminent deportation in March if we do not reach a deal. He ignored reporters who shouted questions about his remarks. Do we need more Haitians?' "Then he went on and he started to describe the immigration from Africa that was being protected in this bipartisan measure".

Trump took to twitter saying in part, "the language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough but this was not the language used".

Senator Dick Durbin of IL, the only Democrat in the room, said Trump had indeed said what he was reported to have said. Durbin called the moment, "heartbreaking". He said these hateful things and he said them repeatedly.

"To no surprise the president tweeted this morning, denying that he used those words", said Durbin. Dr. Rodney Charitable is a design engineer in the defense industry and a Haitian immigrant who said the portrayal of his country is offensive.

"I don't believe the Democrats really want to see a deal on DACA". Back at Abass Diallo's African Market, customers called the president's comments insulting.

The tentative deal also addresses border security, including a border wall, the diversity visa lottery and chain migration, in which U.S. green-card holders can sponsor other family members for permanent residence in the country.

Asked on Friday about the comments attributed to Trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged the anniversary of the quake in Haiti, but declined to directly address the words in question.
