Google’s advertising for its voice assistant is all over Las Vegas for CES

Google’s advertising for its voice assistant is all over Las Vegas for CES

Until now, it seemed like Google was playing catch-up with Amazon. (NASDAQ:AMZN) continue their battle over the market for voice-enabled devices. Other manufacturers announced their own smart speaker products running the Google Assistant, or at least plans to adopt it.

If that wasn't enough, Google Assistant will also live inside your auto. This would be a direct challenge to Amazon. The front-facing camera will come in handy for video calling, using Google Duo.

Affordable smart speakers saw a boom over the gift giving season, with Amazon Echo and Google Home featuring at the forefront of the "most sought" list.

But if CES was a bellwether for the smart assistant, things don't look great for Cortana.

The only possible competitor to Alexa at this point is Google Home, but Alexa has a huge lead: over 4,000 devices can now be controlled by Alexa, the company said, while Google's total is around 1,500.

From a large booth at the event to large billboards on the Las Vegas strip, Google was out and full force. Which kind of begs the question, why not just get this instead of an Amazon Echo product?

Amazon's presence was decidedly less intense, but the company did a solid job keeping up in terms of partner announcements.

We told you last week about how smart home products are something to watch out for, this year, and CES hasn't disappointed.

In the wake of being outpaced by its rival, Amazon's Alexa, Google is looking at a renewed consumer push for its Assistant. Increasingly, voice assistants are becoming a big part of that mobile equation.

Google, as one would expect, is quite anxious about Amazon's continued dominance in the market. With Alexa and Amazon, things would be different. LG, Lenovo, Sony and JBL are all integrating Google Assistant into so-called Smart Displays, which will let you interact with the Assistant in new ways.

They all run Google Assistant, which means they all have the same features. That would impact Google's ad revenue. The reason it's just these two and we haven't thrown Siri in the mix is because of how aggressively Google and Amazon are pushing their assistants to third-party hardware.

Google's outdoor booth was one of the busiest areas of CES 2018. Google's also said to be hammering out a strategy for buying products and services via the Google Assistant. It's unclear if this would be limited to Google's own offerings, like subscriptions to Google Play Music, its Spotify and Apple Music competitor, or more broadly to other vendors, as Alexa permits.

As of this writing, Brad Moon did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
