Legendary sports commentator Keith Jackson, best known for his folksy manner and unique sayings on college football during his 40 years with ABC Sports, passed away Friday evening at the age of 89. Not only was Jackson the voice of college football, he was also a broadcaster for the NFL on Monday Night Football and called World Series Games, including Reggie Jackson's three-home run game for the New York Yankees. Jackson has also left an impression by naming the Rose Bowl the "Granddaddy of Them All" to nicknaming Michigan Stadium "The Big House".

There are plenty of fine television announcers calling college football today, but none has the voice that can produce the visceral effect that Jackson's did. "But it's nearly as if the good Lord created that voice, which sounds like what red clay ought to sound like if it could talk, to be the ideal voice for college football", Davis told the AP. I don't know if he was in any kind of condition to watch the epic national championship game between Georgia and Alabama, decided four days before his death, but I hope so. Jackson later claimed that his use of the phrase wasn't as prevalent as some remembered, and that its popularity lingered because of impersonators spreading it. There are so many moments and games that would have been a dream to call, but the most memorable may have been Jackson's final game as a broadcaster.

"But the one thing you can't ever forget: The playing field is the property of the players and the coaches", Jackson continued.

"I was with Keith, but really I was just a sidekick, while Keith was the star of the show", Broyles said.

Jackson's career concluded at the Texas-USC national championship game at the Rose Bowl in 2006.

Broyles' first ABC broadcast wasn't with Jackson. But I didn't even need to see the play to know Jackson nailed the call.

Most notably, Jackson did Major League Baseball for ABC for years.

"Keith became the gold standard for the announcing of college football games", said Don Ohlmeyer, an ABC Sports producer and director before becoming an NBC executive, according to the website of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

A native of Georgia, Jackson's southern drawl fit perfectly with the sport. He also traveled to 31 countries to report for "ABC's Wide World of Sports".

It's the way college football was supposed to sound and feel, and it just flat doesn't anymore. He has been ABC's lead announcer since 1966, with the exception of 1970, when he was the play-by-play man for the first season of Monday Night Football.

Jackson leaves behind his wife Turi Ann, three grown children (Melanie, Lindsey, Christopher), and three grandchildren (Ian, Holly, Spencer). Frank Gifford succeeded him the next year.

Jackson was a longtime resident of Sherman Oaks, California, and Pender Harbor, British Columbia.

Then, in his down-home, deadpan voice, Jackson added: "I was sitting in the Atlanta airport the other day with my wife Turi".
