Trump hands nuclear deal 'last chance' as he waives Iran sanctions

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday delivered an ultimatum to Washington's European allies to fix the "terrible flaws" in the Iran nuclear deal, or he'll pull the U.S. out in a few months' time.

The agreement, signed by President Obama in 2015, saw economic sanctions waived in return for Iran not developing nuclear weapons.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, like others in Western Europe, is anxious once again that President Donald Trump will blow up the Iran nuclear deal.

European Union powers on Thursday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to endorse a key nuclear agreement with Iran saying the deal is essential for worldwide security.

The new deal envisions tougher control and permanent restrictions on Iran's nuclear plants and missile program if sanctions relief is to continue.

There is a great deal of evidence that Iran is violating the nuclear accord by not allowing full and frank inspections of their facilities and working with North Korea on its programme.

"These provisions must have no expiration date". It prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons while offering sanctions relief to allow the Islamic Republic to participate in global commerce and banking.

In response to reports that President Trump will continue waiving nuclear-related sanctions on Iran while also imposing new non-nuclear sanctions, Paul Kawika Martin, Senior Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Peace Action, released the following statement.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said Trump's declaration and policies "desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

"We will not remain silent as the Iranian dictatorship represses the basic rights of its citizens and will hold Iran's leaders accountable for any violations", the White House said earlier this week. "Rather than repeating exhausted rhetoric, United States must bring itself into full compliance - just like Iran".

Trump also wants Congress to impose new strictures on dealing with Iran, including a law that would explicitly tie Iran's missile programs to its nuclear program.

The waiver he will sign suspends U.S. sanctions on Iran for 120 more days. But even [when that restriction sunsets], what remains is something that was not in place before and will not be in place if we do not stay the course, and that is the verification regime, which is what provides the worldwide community with the confidence that there is, verifiably, no nuclear weapons program in Iran. There are about 400 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors in Iran, and they indicate Iran is complying with the deal. "Busy four months ahead". These penalties largely cut Iran out of the worldwide financial system, until they were suspended by Obama under the nuclear deal.

Simon Gass, who was the lead United Kingdom negotiator on the deal, said talks between European and USA officials had been underway for some weeks on how to keep the deal alive. As the nuclear bargain showed, it's possible to get predator states like Iran to temporarily pause nuclear programs in exchange for lifting sanctions and promises of investment. The three European nations that are party to the deal, France, Germany and Britain, have said that they do not want to reopen the deal unless all parties are agreed.

Additionally, along with pushing the deal back to Congress, the President authorized the U.S. Treasury to impose sanctions on Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which he called a "corrupt personal terror force".
