In one indicator of a worsening season, the CDC reported seven pediatric flu deaths.
"With the increase in influenza impacting many communities across the entire state, it is important to get a flu shot now if you have not done so already", said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith.
The flu season is intensifying in CT and the state Department of Public Health said hundreds of hospitalizations and 15 deaths of residents who are 65 years old and older are alarming.
The review included people over the age of 65, McDowell said.
"We are very well aware that we need to have better flu vaccines", Jernigan said.
You may have heard that the flu that's doing the most damage this year is an H3N2 strain, and that it is less vulnerable to the vaccine.
Because the flu is so bad this season, Chen says health professionals are doing things a bit differently this year.
Officials with Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics say that while no flu related deaths have occurred in Audubon County, flu cases are on the rise and are expected to peak in February or March.
The previous report, from data gathered December 23, stated that seven people had died from the flu in Travis County up to that point.
The department says the children's hometown, county and gender are not being released to protect the privacy of their families. "There's nearly no area in the county that's seen no influenza activity at this point".
The CDC said they aren't sure how severe this flu season will end up being, but the number of related deaths continues to increase.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) held a news briefing Friday on the worsening influenza outbreak. "Usually what happens with influenza is it keeps changing its RNN and DNN, so it's modifying themselves and that's why we're not getting a good strain target".
"People should do everything they can still to reduce the risk of infection, including getting the flu vaccine", Jernigan said. It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to take effect.
"It's something we don't fully understand", said Strang.
Flu activity varies across the state.
The Department of Public Health says flu activity in Kentucky is "widespread" for the fourth consecutive week.
"This strain is associated with more cases and more hospitalizations and more deaths", Jernigan said.
